No Two-Part Bond, Says Daniel Craig

It seems as though the future of the James Bond series isn't as certain as we recently thought it was. While it has been reported that "Skyfall" star Daniel Craig will star in "Bond 24" and "25" and that both movies will be one story arc, Craig is now saying that those reports might not [...]

Zombie Driver game splices Mad Max with undead apocalypse

Android Central

Zombie Driver launched on Google Play for $6.99, giving players with Tegra devices the pleasure of running over undead with a wide variety of vehicles. Of course, nitro boosts can help a bunch when the hordes get a little thick, plus military-issued weaponry can thin the ranks from range. Beyond the story-based campaign, there's a race mode where you compete with other survivors to complete three laps, or you can try to weather an endless tide of zombies in the slaughter mode. Over time, players upgrade their various vehicles according to their playstyle. Like to get up-close and personal? Crank up your armor and dozer ratings. Prefer to hit and run? Upgrade your nitro and get a fast car.

I played the first few levels and the graphics are beautifully gross on the Nexus 7. My only serious qualm is that the controls aren't that awesome. The game came to Xbox Live Arcade and Steam first, and it really shows. The default control scheme lays out WASD-style virtual keys with some awkward diagonal movement. At least there's support for keyboards and gamepads if you've got either handy.

In any case, if you can't get enough gruesomeness this Hallowe'en, Zombie Driver is a nice change of pace from the deluge of other slaughterfests out there.

(AP) ? Evoking harrowing memories of Hurricane Katrina, 300 patients were evacuated floor by floor from a premier hospital that lost generator power at the height of superstorm Sandy.

Rescuers and staff at New York University Langone Medical Center, some making 10 to 15 trips down darkened stairwells, began their mission Monday night, the youngest and sickest first, finishing about 15 hours later.

Among the first out were 20 babies in neonatal intensive care, some on battery-powered respirators.

"Everyone here is a hero," Dr. Bernard Birnbaum, a senior vice president at Tisch Hospital, the flagship at NYU, told exhausted crews as he released all but essential employees late Tuesday morning. "Thank you, thank you, thank you."

More than two dozen ambulances from around the city lined up around the lower Manhattan block to transport the sick to Mount Sinai Hospital, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, St. Luke's Hospital, New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Long Island Jewish Hospital.

Margaret Chu, 36, of Manhattan, gave birth to a son, Cole, shortly before noon Monday. "Then, a couple of hours later, things got a little hairy. The electricity started to flicker and the windows got shaky," she said from LIJ's Lenox Hill, where she was transported after generators failed and NYU was plunged into darkness.

Chu, accompanied by husband Gregory Prata, was able to walk 13 flights into a waiting ambulance with help from staff and first responders lighting the way by flashlight. She said other women who had given birth during the storm and were evacuated were carried down on sleigh-like gurneys.

"Everybody was pretty calm. I would call it organized chaos," she said.

Meanwhile, other New York hospitals canceled outpatient appointments and elective surgeries. And several closed and evacuated patients, including New York Downtown Hospital, a Manhattan campus of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System and other NYU-affiliated facilities. Bellevue and Coney Island Hospital were evacuating Tuesday afternoon.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was clearly angry about the NYU Medical Center crisis when he addressed reporters late Monday, saying hospital officials had assured the city they had working backup power.

Last year, NYU evacuated in advance of Hurricane Irene on the order of city officials, spokeswoman Allison Clair said. "This year we were not told to evacuate by the city."

Without power, there are no elevators so patients ? some of whom were being treated for cancer and other serious illnesses ? were carefully carried down staircases. As the evacuation began, gusts of wind blew their blankets while nurses and other staff huddled around the sick on gurneys, some holding IVs and other equipment.

NYU did send home about 100 of its 400 patients earlier Monday to lighten its load, starting the evacuation of the remaining 300 patients at about 7:30 p.m. when backup generators began to fail, Clair said. There were no injuries during relocation.

The scene was reminiscent of hospital evacuations in New Orleans after Katrina, with patients being carried down stairs on stretchers because elevators were out, and nurses squeezing oxygen bags for them because of lack of power to run breathing machines.

The difference is that in New Orleans, patients were trapped in flooded hospitals; in New York, dozens of ambulances could get through to move patients to safety.

The hospital blamed the severity of Sandy and higher-than-expected storm surge that flooded its basement but had little else to say beyond a short statement emailed to reporters after the evacuation was complete.

"At this time, we are focusing on assessing the full extent of the storm's impact on all of our patient care, research and education facilities," the statement said.

Most of the power outages in lower Manhattan, where Tisch is located, were due to an explosion at an electrical substation, Consolidated Edison said. It wasn't clear whether flooding or flying debris caused the explosion, said John Miksad, senior vice president for electric operations at Con Edison.

At NYU, sporadic telephone service made it difficult for the hospital to notify relatives where patients were taken. It relied instead on receiving hospitals to notify families.

Until the generators failed, Chu considered herself and her new baby out of harm's way. By the time she was evacuated, the streets were eerily silent and the night sky lit up by emergency lights of waiting ambulances.

"My son will appreciate this someday," she said.

Resume Cover Letters: How To Use A "Thanksgiving" Cover Letter

? Written By Jimmy Sweeney

President of CareerJimmy.com

Hungry job seekers focus their cover letters on what they want, what they expect, and what they can do. Then they wait for the phone to ring to book an interview. That's one way to approach the job search market.?

?

Essential as these points are, however, they're not nearly as effective as opening and closing a cover letter with two simple words?THANK YOU.

?

Why say thank you when you don't know the hiring manager and you don't have the job yet? Here's why. Behind every desk in every company sits a human being just like you, a person with hopes and dreams, plans and challenges, and a desire to be acknowledged and appreciated.

?

One day your cover letter will land on his or her desk. Will you jump off the page as a person ideal for the job, a team player, someone who'll be a great addition to the staff? I hope so, but more important, will you come across as someone who has a humble and grateful attitude, an individual who recognizes the value of an opportunity, the privilege of holding a job and working with others toward a common goal? That profile is what every hiring manager is looking for.

Giving Thanks Could Land You a Job!

Thank you. These two simple words seem to be in hiding because they so rarely appear in public! But they are golden, even more so than your resume, skills, and qualifications?because they set the stage for what is to come. What man or woman wouldn't respond to someone who is polite, personal, and professional?

?

Following are examples of how to express your thanks at the beginning of your cover letter and at the end.

?

Dear Mr. Hiring Manager:

?

Thank you for taking a moment to read my cover letter. I'm pleased to meet you here and hope to do so in person. I was happy to see on careerjimmy.com your listing for an administrative assistant?a position for which I feel qualified and eager to fill.??

?

Thank you again for reading my letter and resume and for considering me for the job. May I come in for an interview so I can hear your perspective on this position and the qualities you're looking for in the person you hire? I can be available any time that works for you. I appreciate this opportunity very much.

?

Example #2:

Dear Mr. Hiring Manager:

?

Thank you for posting on careerjimmy.com such a clear description of the opening for an administrative assistant now available at your company. I was able to tell at a glance that this job is just what I've been looking for and feel qualified to fill.

?

You must receive hundreds of cover letters every week??all the more reason for me to thank you again for taking time to read mine and for considering me for the position of executive secretary on your administrative staff. I'd welcome the opportunity to meet with you in person for an interview so we can discuss what I can bring to the job and what you expect from the person you hire.

?

After sending off your cover letter, take a moment to expand your thanks silently.?

?

??????? For the job that is waiting for you, even if you haven't landed it yet

??????? For the person who will hire you when the time comes

?

??????? For the experience, talent, and skill you have to earn a living

?

??????? For the people in your life who love and support you

?

Thanksgiving Day is not the only time to give thanks. Move gratitude to the top of your list at home, at work, and in the community and you will find what you're looking for in the job market and in your relationships.

Methodological pluralism ? media/anthropology

by Geoff Payne via The SAGE Dictionary of Social Research Methods (2006)

Print pages: 174-176

Definition

An approach that advocates flexibility in the selection of social research methods, based on the principle of choosing the most suitable methods for the nature of the problem being researched. More generally, methodological pluralism calls on the researcher to be tolerant of other people?s preferred methods even when they differ from one?s own.

Distinctive Features

From time to time, disagreements among social scientists about which are the ?best? social research methods become more vocal and indeed, confrontational. An example of this is the competition between older, ethnographic research styles associated with sociologists at the University of Chicago, and the (then newer) work based on social surveys being promoted by Harvard and Columbia after World War II. In the UK a conflict between quantitative methods and several newer forms of qualitative research took place during the 1970s. These disputes are usually marked by antagonistic criticisms of published work, lengthy expositions in defence of particular methods, and even personal abuse.

Methodological pluralism, promoted by Bell and Newby (1977), rejected the idea that one type of methods was automatically better than another. They argued that it was healthy for sociology to contain a number of different theoretical perspectives, and that while each perspective tended to imply a given method of research, each new research project should be tackled on the basis of its own particular features. The research methods selected for the project should be the ones that best fitted the characteristics of the phenomena being studied.

For example, studies of the national rates at which something was occurring, or projects dealing with simpler concepts that could be relatively easily measured, were better suited to social surveys, pre-coded questionnaires and other quantitative methods. On the other hand, when more detail was required, or phenomena were complex, subtle, or unclear, this was more suited to research by observation, less structured interviews, ethnographic description and other qualitative styles. Not every researcher would use every style of research during their careers, nor should they be proficient in all research methods. The plurality would be achieved in the total research output of the discipline as a whole (Bell and Roberts, 1984).

Evaluation

Despite the common sense of methodological pluralism, more sociologists pay lip-service to it than actively adopt it as a philosophy. The main reason is that during their education and early careers, each researcher acquires a set of personal preferences for one type of social science over others. This is not just a question of technical skills, but rather an interest in certain topics and a philosophical view of the social world and how it can be analysed.

There are genuine differences between schools of research, from those seeking to involve and empower the people being researched, through to those that regard ?respondents? merely as sources of information, and from those that see the social world as intricately interconnected and difficult to ?know?, to those that concentrate on the generality of patterned associations between small sets of ?variables?. While not always consciously returning to the complex social theories that underlie their positions, researchers read mainly a sub-set of the literature written by like-minded colleagues, defining research problems in specific ways, and therefore carry out their research using a narrow repertoire of methods.

In some cases, this results only in a rather focused approach, without much concern for other approaches. In others, the intellectual context of the research is strongly associated with a particular method: the context defines what is worth researching, how it should be researched and what order of interpretations can be made. In its more extreme form this results in ritualized denunciation of alternatives often becoming a part of publication. Where some researchers adhere to a ?standpoint? position, their intention is an explicitly ideological one which goes beyond just making new discoveries, to the promotion of the interests of one particular group. Challenging other researchers? methods is one way of undermining the position of rival interest groups (Payne and Payne, 2004: 89-93, 152-7).

Such out-of-hand dismissal because of the type of methods a study has used is a different matter from legitimately debating the competency of its research basis, when that is part of a general evaluation. However, it would be wrong to portray academic life as consisting solely of calm, rational, philosophical debate. Academics also compete for resources (research funding, access to journals, tenured posts, career promotion) in just as determined a way as do people in other walks of life. Attacking the type of research methods used by rivals is one weapon in the struggle between individuals, and institutions, for supremacy.

Not surprisingly, methodological pluralism?s failure to recognize these processes has meant that its call for toleration has largely gone unheeded. For example, in the UK the sociology that has been published in recent years has depended heavily on a narrow range of qualitative methods. A recent study of journal papers found only a minority using quantitative methods: only 2.6 per cent ?involved bivariate analysis and were written by sociologists at British universities, and only 8 (3.5%) involved multivariate techniques ? This can hardly be described as methodological pluralism? (Payne et al., 2004: 160).

[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] Jason Erik Lundberg on His New ...

Jason Erik Lundberg is a USian now living in Singapore, and the author of several books of the fantastic ? The Alchemy of Happiness (2012), Embracing the Strange (2012), Red Dot Irreal (2011), The Time Traveler?s Son (2008), and Four Seasons in One Day (with Janet Chui, 2003) ? one children?s book ? A New Home For Jia Jia and Kai Kai (2012) ? and more than a hundred short stories, articles, and book reviews. He is also the the founding editor of LONTAR: The Journal of Southeast Asian Speculative Fiction, series editor of Best New Singaporean Short Stories, and editor of Fish Eats Lion (2012), A Field Guide to Surreal Botany (2008), and Scattered Covered Smothered (2004). His writing has appeared in venues such as Quarterly Literary Review Singapore, the Raleigh News & Observer, Qarrtsiluni, Sybil?s Garage, Strange Horizons, Subterranean Magazine, The Third Alternative, Electric Velocipede, and many other places.

His short fiction has been nominated for the SLF Fountain Award, shortlisted for the Brenda L. Smart Award for Short Fiction, and honorably mentioned in The Year?s Best Fantasy and Horror. From 2005-2008, he facilitated an occasional podcast called Lies and Little Deaths: A Virtual Anthology. With his wife, artist-writer Janet Chui, he runs Two Cranes Press, a critically-acclaimed independent publishing atelier established in 2003. He is a graduate of the Clarion Writers? Workshop and holds a degree in creative writing from North Carolina State University, and is an active member in Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America and PEN American Center.

Jaym Gates: Jason, thanks for taking the time to discuss Red Dot Irreal your new collection from Math Paper Press. ?Bogeyman,? the first story in the collection, is an action-packed steampunkish tale of magic, romance and adventure. Was this story inspired by any historical tales?

Jason Erik Lundberg: Not from any specific tales per se, but I was inspired by legends of the Bugis, who were a seafaring ethnic group in the mid-1800s and were known to be quite fearsome throughout the Indonesian archipelago. I?ve lived in Singapore for the past five and a half years, and I love the idea that such a squeaky clean paternalistic country was once a popular haven for regional pirates (although quite likely different from the ones presented in the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie). I also found it fascinating that the stories brought back by British sailors about the ruthlessness of the Bugis led to the more generic term ?bogeyman? as a way to frighten children into behaving themselves.

I initially wrote this story as a challenge for a pirate-themed anthology edited by Ann and Jeff VanderMeer called Fast Ships, Black Sails. And they quite rightly rejected it; the pirates are largely off-stage for most of the story, only making an appearance near the end. However, to my surprise, Bill Schafer bought it for Subterranean Magazine right afterward, and I was honored that it was published in the magazine?s final print issue.

JG: I think ?Wise Fish? was my favorite in the collection. The hominess of a good curry contrasts with the inevitable ending of the story. Food is an art form, passed down through families, influencing memories and offering insights into culture. Do you have a particular meal or dish that has special significance to you?

JEL: Chicken curry dwan, which is a dish that my mother has been cooking since I was a kid. Actually, I think she may have invented it, since a Google search only turns up my own blog entries on it. But the ingredients are chicken breasts, broccoli spears, Cream of Chicken soup, mayonnaise, evaporated milk, grated American cheese, lemon juice, bread crumbs, butter, and curry powder. Definitely not something to eat if you?re watching your weight, which is why we only ever have it on special occasions.

But there?s something about the way my mother cooks it that 1) makes me want to eat until I?m absolutely stuffed, and 2) takes me back to every other occasion in which she has cooked it. Through all the five senses, the dish evokes nothing but positive memories and associations, a sense of home and family and contentment.

JG: You recently became a book editor at Epigram Books, a publisher specializing in Singaporean fiction, and the editor of LONTAR, a new literary journal. What are some of the defining themes and characteristics of the fiction coming out of Singapore and surrounding areas, and how does it differ from what comes out in American publications?

JEL: Much of Southeast Asia is still dealing with the aftermath of colonialism, and all the hang-ups that come with systemic cultural inferiorization by the British, Dutch, and other Western powers. Because of this, the feeling is that local literature is automatically not as good as that from the UK and USA. In Singapore, this mindset, along with the overarching soft authoritarianism that pervades the culture, leads to authorial insecurity and self-censorship especially in young writers, so that they feel that they need permission to write, and then still hold themselves back from certain topics or issues because they might ?get in trouble.?

Of the fiction published in Singapore, much of it is quite introspective and psychological, and wrestles with all of these post-colonial notions in various ways. Drama and poetry are still the favored literary genres here, and so prose doesn?t have as much of a footprint in the landscape yet. But the most exciting fiction-writing coming out of the country today is from the under-45 crowd, those who were born after Singapore?s independence, and who are not as preoccupied with the country?s obsession with nation-building. These writers are the beneficiaries and challengers of globalization, and have a cosmopolitan maturity and sense of connectedness that make their fiction more accessible and outward-looking. This can be seen in the fiction of established writers such as Dave Chua, Alvin Pang, Alfian Sa?at, Jeffrey Lim, and Cyril Wong, as well as newer writers I?m particularly excited about, such as Stephanie Ye, Wei Fen Lee, J.Y. Yang, O Thiam Chin, Amanda Lee, and Daryl Yam.

JG: Can you talk about LONTAR and what you?re hoping to do with that?

JEL: LONTAR is a new quarterly literary journal focusing on non-realist writing from and about Southeast Asia. The journal is published and distributed by Math Paper Press in Singapore, and the first issue will be released in March 2013.

The last couple of years have seen a blooming of SF anthologies from Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore (including my own Fish Eats Lion, launching at the 2012 Singapore Writers Festival), and although one-off anthologies and anthology series are great for accruing a representative sample of works in a given year, it is even more important to keep the conversation going all-year round. By providing a continual venue for this particular flavor of writing concentrating on this particular part of the world, it is hoped that 1) SEA writers working in the English language will have an ongoing platform for which to express their cultures, traditions, mythologies, folk religions, and/or daily lives, and 2) non-SEA writers will see Southeast Asia as a fertile ground for speculative storytelling and move beyond the touristy exoticism that frequently pervades the minds of those unfamiliar with the region. Above all, LONTAR is engaged with publishing speculative fiction, non-fiction articles, poetry, and sequential art from both SEA and non-SEA writers, in order to spread awareness of this literature to readers who might not normally be exposed to it, and to celebrate its existence and diversity within the region.

The premiere issue of LONTAR will present speculative writing from and about the Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore, Laos, and Vietnam. Showcased are a post-apocalyptic Manila from Kate Osias, a utopian Kuala Lumpur from Zen Cho, a haunting military excursion down the Yellow River from Elka Ray Nguyen, and a reprinted novelette about a young Laotian journalist?s place in the sensationalist future of news reporting from award-winner Paolo Bacigalupi; speculative poetry from Chris Mooney-Singh, Ang Si Min, and Bryan Thao Worra; and an unusual exploration of Philippine magic systems from Paolo Chikiamco.

We?re currently still assembling the contents for issue #2; prospective contributors can find the complete submission guidelines on our website.

JG: Your bio states that you are a Buddhist lay practitioner. Do you see this reflecting in your stories and themes, or has there not been much effect?

JEL: I think it absolutely has filtered down through all aspects of my writing, although I try not to be preachy about it. Because I?m naturally a skeptic, I approach Buddhism more as a life philosophy than a religion. Its central tenets are compassion, interconnectedness, and consequence, and I?ve examined all three of these themes in my short stories, and especially in the novel that I just recently finished writing. Some are a bit more obvious (karma and reincarnation in my story Complications of the Flesh, which was published in Bull Spec and has just been released as an individual ebook on Smashwords), while some are much more subtle (the poisonous effects of holding onto hate in my yet-unpublished short story King of Hearts).

I?ve slipped a bit as of late, and wish that I would spend more time meditating and reading the various Buddhist texts such as The Dhammapada and the more practical contemporary books by monastics such as Cultivating a Compassionate Heart by Venerable Thubten Chodron (who is my guru). I feel like I?m starting to get to the point in my career where things are beginning to take off, and unfortunately a casualty of this has been my spiritual practice; I need to do a better job of reincorporating this into my life.

JG: What projects are you working on now, and what can we expect from you in the near future?

JEL: I?ve just recently finished a 120,000-word novel called A Fickle and Restless Weapon that, in all, took me six and a half years to complete. Here?s my elevator pitch for the book: ?A Calvino-esque psychological novel about transnational characters using varied art forms to cope in a Southeast Asian surveillance state. With explosions.?

I?m sending the manuscript around now to my first readers, which is a terrifying prospect. No one else has seen this work but me for the last 78 months; I?ve put all of myself into it, and it?s a bit like baring my soul to the world, so to speak. Once I get their feedback, I?ll go through another round of revisions, and then hopefully submit it to agents in the US starting in early 2013.

But as for the next several months, I?ve got quite a lot of things coming out. *deep breath*

In October, I will release a revised edition of my 2001 limited-edition chapbook The Curragh of Kildaire as a free ebook, with a brand-new 3,000-word afterword written especially for this edition. I?m doubly excited because I?ll be reproducing the ?electronic woodcut? illustrations that Jamie Bishop created for the original chapbook. All of the profits from the sale of this ebook will be donated to charity: 50% to the Jamie Bishop Scholarship in Art & Design at LaGrange College, and 50% to the The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

In November, Math Paper Press (who published Red Dot Irreal) will launch an anthology that I edited, Fish Eats Lion: New Singaporean Speculative Fiction. They will also be releasing my hybrid-essay in chapbook form called Embracing the Strange: The Transformative Impact of Speculative Fiction, which began life as a plenary lecture cum memoir delivered to Singapore?s best and brightest young creative writers earlier this year.

In December, Infinity Plus Books will be releasing two ebook collections: a second edition reissue of Red Dot Irreal, with three additional stories, including one written especially for the new edition, called Occupy: An Exhibition; and The Alchemy of Happiness, which will feature two previously-published stories, a brand-new novelette called?Always a Risk, an electronic reprint of Embracing the Strange, and an interview with Singaporean writer and editor Wei Fen Lee.

And then in March 2013, Math Paper Press will release issue #1 of LONTAR, and Epigram Books will launch the first volume of Best New Singaporean Short Stories, a new biennial anthology series I am in charge of curating. Short stories are my first love, and I?m so glad to be able to spread this love with my new editorial duties.

Red Dot Irreal is now available from Books Actually.

Google officially lands deal with Warner Music Group

Make no mistake -- landing a deal for streaming with Warner Music Group is no easy chore. Search for 'Red Hot Chili Peppers' on programs like MOG, and you'll probably be sorely disappointed in what results are returned. Tucked within Google's Nexus blowout this morning was this nugget: the search giant has finally nailed down a deal with Warner, who will be "adding its full music catalog with new songs coming each day." In other words, this completes the puzzle necessary for Google to confess that it's "working with all of the major record labels globally," with this particular deal paving the way for acts like Green Day, Madonna, Neil Young and RHCP to appear soon in the Play Store. Specifics on which artists are coming when remain elusive, but feel free to refresh like mad if you're so inclined.

1 Of The Most Important Parts Of Designing - Home Improvement ...

1 of the most important parts of designing or redecorating a home is fitting the correct flooring. The right decision can ensure your home transforms into a beautiful and divan location in which to reside. Nevertheless, it can often be challenging to decide on the flooring that is correct for your home.

Wood is currently the most popular house flooring material for numerous reasons. It enhances the decor of any room, is ecologically friendly and provides warmth and a timeless elegance that increases in value as the years move on. If you decide to fit wooden flooring, consider each of the 3 types of wooden flooring accessible to you.

Kinds of wood flooring:

one. Solid wooden flooring.

These are wooden planks or blocks (parquet) that are cut from logs and dried in a kiln to a dampness level of in between 8% and twelve%. They are then machine cut into various lengths, widths and grades and are later processed at the factory with wax or lacquer. Solid wooden flooring is generally left unfinished for the installer to end when fitting on website.

two. Engineered flooring.

This type of wood flooring is a hardwood veneer positioned atop a cross plywood base. Engineered flooring comes in numerous thicknesses ranging from 10mm to 21mm. They have several benefits more than strong wood, such as simplicity of set up.

three. Laminate flooring.

This flooring is a photograph of a wooden grain that is then laminated atop a wood composite base. It is not actual wooden however it does have numerous advantages more than the other flooring kinds. Laminate flooring is durable, not delicate to moisture and the simplest to install. The photograph grain is also so good that you would not effortlessly know it is not actual wood.

Whichever flooring you choose, it is important to familiarise your self with the techniques used to match them.

Fitting Techniques:

Floating.

Floating is where the flooring is not fastened to the sub flooring. This technique is usually only ever utilized exactly where a strong sub flooring (this kind of as concrete) is currently in location. It is recommended to only use adhesive flooring fitting foam to match floating flooring. It is never suggested to glue together floorboards and float them.

Mechanical fitting.

This is a well-liked technique for fitting hardwood flooring. It involves utilizing hand resources such as tape evaluate, carpenters sq. and hammer to nail or screw the flooring onto current floorboards, sub floor, joints or battens. There are various ways of finishing the job with this technique, such as secret nailing where a nail gun is utilized to drive nails via the side of the tongue at angles of in between 33 degrees and 45 degrees.

Gluing.

Set up suggestions.

The key to successful set up is proper preparing, planning and execution. Make sure the relative humidity in the space where the floor is to be set up or even saved is between fifty% and sixty five%. Too much humidity can damage the flooring and give very poor outcomes.

Also, check that the floor you get is kiln dried to the suitable moisture content level: ideally ten%. The floor ought to also have been saved in temperature managed conditions prior to your assortment. This ensures the floor will need small if any acclimatisation before lying.

Stock markets to close Monday, possibly Tuesday

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stock and options markets will be closed on Monday, and possibly Tuesday, as regulators, exchanges and brokers worried about the integrity of markets in the face of Hurricane Sandy.

Market participants and regulators decided to shut the market because the storm will make it difficult to ensure the safety of employees, major exchanges said.

The decision to close stock and options markets came after regulators, exchanges, and dealers discussed the unknowns that would have been tested if the markets opened on Monday, three of the sources said.

For example, NYSE Euronext's New York Stock Exchange had planned to shut its physical trading floor, which would have meant operating as an all-electronic exchange for the first time.

Bond markets will remain open, but will close at noon, a trade group said.

The decision to shut down the stock markets came after Wall Street had prepared to open for business on Monday with limited staffing, booking hotel rooms for key employees and leaning on offices in other cities. The storm forced the New York mass transit system to shut down on Sunday evening, leaving tens of thousands of employees stuck at home.

Wall Street banks, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Citigroup Inc, activated their emergency plans, which many firms put in place after the September 11, 2001, attacks. Banks were putting key staff, including some traders, in hotels and also are relying on others who live near the bank's offices.

It was not immediately clear if those plans had also changed.

Some offices in lower Manhattan's Financial District are in evacuation zones and most non-critical staff and employees who don't rely on high-speed systems, including some investment bankers, were asked to work from home.

The storm is expected to slam into the U.S. East Coast on Monday night, bringing torrential rain, high wind, severe flooding and power outages. The rare "super storm" - created by an Arctic jet stream wrapping itself around a tropical storm - could be the biggest to hit the U.S. mainland, forecasters said.

The scramble on Wall Street started early as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the subway, bus and rail system in the city would begin to close at 7 p.m. EDT on Sunday (2300 GMT).

About 8.5 million commuters use the Metropolitan Transit Authority's transit lines daily, meaning most Wall Street employees would be unable to get to work. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg also closed public schools and ordered an evacuation of 375,000 people in coastal areas, including downtown offices of banks such as Citigroup.

All of the U.S. exchanges, as well as major broker-dealers, and regulators were involved in the decision to close the markets, according to several executives at exchanges and financial firms.

The U.S. markets have seen three high-profile snafus this year, beginning with the failed IPO of BATS Global Markets, the No. 3 U.S. equities exchange, on its own exchange; Facebook Inc's botched markets debut on Nasdaq's exchange; and a software glitch that cost trading firm Knight Capital well over $400 million, nearly forcing it into bankruptcy.

TRANSIT SHUT DOWN

The major exchanges and most big trading firms have alternate trading facilities if downtown Manhattan is inaccessible, but the storm's wide path may affect a number of sites in the New York metropolitan area. Authorities have warned of possible widespread power outages that could last for days.

Wall Street was spared the worst of Hurricane Irene in August last year. Officials had feared Hurricane Irene would flood lower Manhattan and cripple business in the world's financial capital, but the flooding was minor and there were no major disruptions at the exchanges.

The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association said earlier on Sunday it is recommending an early close of noon EDT on Monday for the trading of U.S. dollar-denominated, fixed-income securities. It said its member firms should decide for themselves whether their fixed-income departments remain open for trading.

The foreign exchange market's activity generally follows the fixed income markets.

The New York Federal Reserve has calls scheduled for early Monday morning with dealers to see what each dealer is doing to cope with the storm, and will modify its market activities accordingly.

In Washington, the Commerce Department said it would post its report on personal income and spending for September on its website at 8:30 a.m. as scheduled, even though the federal government was closed.

The Federal Reserve said it would postpone its regularly scheduled releases, including its weekly report on selected interest rates and daily commercial paper data. The Fed said it would release the data when federal offices in the Washington area reopened.

Hurricane Sandy also led to some events being canceled or postponed. Citigroup Prime Brokerage postponed a hedge fund event that had been scheduled for Tuesday.

How an upstart helped Samsung beat the iPhone in energy ...

Joan Bryna Michelson is moderating a panel at the upcoming VERGE SF conference, on "The New Ecosystem of Innovation" which takes place Nov. 12-13 in San Francisco. For more information, click?here.

Mobile phones are a massive business. Carriers had registered 5.9 billion mobile-cellular subscriptions as of January 2011, putting global penetration at 87 percent, according to the International Telecommunications Union.

Think about all the energy required to charge all those phones.

Fortunately, there are innovations in the works to reduce those energy requirements, and the resulting environmental impacts. One of the biggest: OLED or organic light emitting diodes. "Over the next 20 years, the [U.S. Department of Energy] estimates that widespread adoption of LED and OLED lighting could reduce electricity demands 60 percent and prevent almost 260 metric tons of carbon emission," according to a recent ElectroniCast study.

One manufacturer in particular is taking the lead on the energy-saving OLED technology. No, it?s not Apple, though the release of the iPhone 5 has reinvigorated the debate over which is the ?better? display: LCD (which Apple uses) or OLED.

Samsung is the?largest manufacturer?of cell phone and other displays, and within the last several years has moved its focus to OLED, a promising new technology?that uses?up to 40 percent less energy. As a result, Samsung is making the most energy-efficient screen technology even more energy efficient ? with the help of a small, little-known company in the Arizona desert.

David vs. Goliath

?Over time, OLED?s are expected to have a huge impact on the overall electronics industry,? Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Nupur Sinha wrote recently. Because Samsung is the ?Goliath? in this space, with 97 percent of the AMOLED market (a version of OLED) and 25 percent of the overall cell phone market, its steps leave a big footprint.

Cell phone manufacturers were seeking to improve OLED technology by focusing on the materials, much like a cook focuses on the ingredients. What a small start-up named Colnatec did, however, was focus on the tools ? the knives instead of the ingredients.

Colnatec?s team of wizard engineers, led by co-Founder and chief technology officer Scott Grimshaw, developed the ?Cuisinart of OLED tools,? as Wendy Jameson, Colnatec?s co-founder and CEO described it. Samsung is one of Colnatec?s biggest customers.

Nexus 4 leaked on video, Android 42 gets exposed alongside new LG hardware

There ain't much here we haven't seen before, but look -- it's a video. The thoroughly leaked LG Nexus 4 -- which was likely scheduled to be formally unveiled today if not for Hurricane Sandy -- has shown up in a 107 second video hosted up by Swedroid. We're guessing that select international sites briefed on the handset weren't hearing any of that "delay" stuff, and have instead let loose on the material they had access to. The hardware itself is no surprise, boasting clean lines and a minimalistic motif that looks a hair thicker than we had envisioned before. Android 4.2 looks right at home, though -- as if you haven't seen enough of that in the Nexus 10 leak. Head on past the break and press play, won't you?
