Japan government mulls Renesas rescue with Toyota, others: sources

TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese government fund is considering a bailout of Renesas Electronics as part of a consortium including Toyota Motor Corp, countering a 100 billion yen ($1.3 billion)bid for the chip maker by private equity firm KKR, two sources said on Saturday.

The taxpayer-funded Innovation Network Corp's plan may include an offer of more than 150 billion yen in return for a controlling stake in Renesas, the two sources familiar with the discussion said on condition they not be identified.

The offer may be delivered to Renesas's shareholders, NEC Corp, Hitachi Ltd and Mitsubishi Electric Corp next month, the Nikkei business daily reported earlier. The group wants to acquire a majority stake in Renesas before the end of the year, the Nikkei said.

A spokesman for Toyota declined to comment on the report. Renesas in a statement said it had not released the information.

Officials at the three owners, who asked not to be identified, said they were unaware of the bid. One source at a financial firm said the plan that counters KKR could take several months to devise.

Joining Toyota and the government fund will be Panasonic Corp, Nissan Motor Co Honda Motor Co, Canon Inc, Fanuc Corp and auto parts makers Denso Corp and Keihin Corp, the Nikkei reported.

The group may also invite German industrial group Bosch GmbH and other foreign firms to join it, the Nikkei added.

KKR is also in talks to buy control of Renesas, which would be its largest investment in Japan, sources told Reuters last month. That deal would give KKR more than 50 percent of cash-strapped Renesas, and could speed the pace of its restructuring in the face of sinking prices and aggressive overseas rivals.

Renesas, the world's leading manufacturer of microcontroller chips used in cars, is laying off 12 percent of its workforce and plans to sell or consolidate half of its domestic plants.

It would be among the top 10 biggest private equity investments into the world's third largest economy. Run by cousins and private equity pioneers Henry Kravis and George Roberts, KKR has operated in Asia since 2006. Its only purchase in Japan to date is the 2010 acquisition of recruitment services company Intelligence from Usen Corp for $357 million.

KKR's bid is the second this year in Japan by a foreign private equity firm in a Japanese chipmaker, after China's Hony Capital and U.S. buyout fund TPG Capital teamed up to bid for Elpida Memory Inc.

Elpida, Japan's last remaining player in the dynamic random access memory (DRAM) market, is now in talks to be bought by U.S. rival Micron Technology Inc. ($1 = 78.1600 Japanese yen)

Felipe Massa hopes for good result in 2012 Singapore GP - Bettor.com

Felipe Massa hopes for good result in 2012 Singapore GP ? Formula 1 news

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa has said that he is hoping to achieve good result in the 2012 Singapore Grand Prix after securing competitive points in the previous race at Autodromo di Monza.

Massa delivered a convincing performance in the Italian GP and secured 4th place finish behind his teammate, Fernando Alonso who is presently leading the drivers? championship with 179 points.

The Brazilian driver struggled during the opening five races this year. Nevertheless, he has performed quite well in the last few races. Moreover, after attaining promising results in the preceding two races, he is targeting to carry on his good form in the forthcoming race which is to be held at Marina Bay Street Circuit this weekend. ?

?Monaco was a very good race for us,? Massa said. ?Hungary not so much, which is the high downforce tracks. For sure it's quite a different layout between Monaco and Hungary, but here is more in the direction of Monaco so I really expect to have a good direction, a good car, and I hope we can have a good possibility to score a good amount of points on this track.?

In addition, he said that they need to keep on making the sound improvements in their car in order to keep up the level of consistency in the races ahead. He also said that they must make the right analysis about the conditions of the track of the next race to take the full advantage of their updates.

"We need to carry on trying to do a good result, trying to do the best in car, trying to put everything together that's what I'm always trying to do,? he said.

It will be important to note that he has been surrounded by many rumours that the Scarlet team is finding his replacement for the next season. Nonetheless, the 31-year-old has said that he is not paying any attention to the prevailing speculations regarding his future and is targeting to perform at his best in the remaining seven grands prix of the current season.

Above and beyond, let?s see how he shows up in the Singapore GP.

BANTAM PRIDE: Bantam Newsletter - First Issue of 2012-2013

September 21, 2012, Issue #1??????????????????????????????????? Petaluma Junior High School
Phone: 778-4724, Fax: 778-4600??????????????????????????????????? Principal, John W. Lehmann
Website: Petalumajuniorhigh.org??????????????????????????? Asst. Principal, Nancy Emanuele

Principal's Note

Dear Parents,

????? Thank you for attending the August 29th Back to School Night. I hope it was as informational as it was pleasant. I appreciate your membership in our PTSA and remind some of you that you may still join! Forms are available in the office.

????? Our first grading period ends Thursday, September 27th.? Please maintain communication with teachers and children by checking the daily planner, calling the homework hotline and checking teachers' websites.

????? We will publish this newsletter five times this year and will send it home with your child on Fridays. The newsletter will contain updates from the academic and elective departments, a Principal's message and updates from the PTSA. Together with the weekly phone messages, the marquis on the front lawn, handbook, website, homework hotline, and this newsletter, we will continue to maintain communication with you regarding important events and dates. Do not hesitate to call the office or email me at jlehmann@petk12.org if and when you have questions.

????? As part of our Building Excellent Schools Together (BEST) training PJHS conducts a weekly Monday morning full school assembly during which we, conduct the pledge, read the daily bulletin and recognize students for academic and social accomplishment both in and out of school. If your child has participated in a meaningful activity, in or outside of school, please give the office a call so we can recognize them in front of their peers. Recognition for academic excellence, our Renaissance Awards, will take place next week for those 8th graders who scored on the honor roll in their last semester of 7th grade. The honor roll certificates for this year's 7th and 8th graders will take place at the semester end in January.

????? The PTSA has been very busy and already scheduled our annual Pasta Feed for Wednesday, October 24th, from 5:30-7:30pm. In addition to great pasta provided by the Pasta King, we will have a silent auction and an old fashion cake walk sponsored by the 6th Grade Academy.? More information and flyers will follow as the date grows near.

????? Many thanks to Ms. Tricia De Carli, our PJHS Volunteer Coordinator, who has created a data base of interested and motivated parents who are beginning to help out in many capacities here on campus from before and after school greeters, Library helpers, and lunch time club organizers. We have lots of needs and if you have free time please consider volunteering your time. You may contact Tricia at tndecarli@comcast.net for more information or to sign up to help!

????? We conducted our first Fire/Emergency drill last Tuesday morning and within four minutes the entire school had lined up in orderly rows on the blacktop. We will conduct additional drills so that in the event of an actual emergency we will be ready to respond quickly and safely. PJHS is fortunate to have a large campus with space, and a dedicated staff that take these drills seriously.

????? Thank you for your patience in dropping off and picking up your children from school. Slow and steady is the key.

????? If you are interested in carpooling, send me an email and I will create a data base to share names and numbers.??

????? We are off to a great start!

????? John Lehmann, Principal

Assistant Principal's Greeting

????? Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year at PJHS!? My name is Nancy Emanuele, and it is my pleasure to serve students, families and staff in my role as assistant principal.? I invite you to contact me (email is always good!) with any concerns you may have about your student's well being and ability to access her/his education fully at PJHS.? Our goal is to provide a safe and engaging learning environment for all students.

????? As you know, the junior high school years are a time of enormous physical, emotional and cognitive growth in your child.? At no other time since infancy will your child change so much in a relatively short period of time.? Please take a moment to look over the attached schedule of free, PTSA-sponsored parent education workshops.? Susan Victor, Sonoma State Professor (Department of Secondary Education), and parent of two teenagers in our Petaluma community will conduct an engaging, interactive workshop entitled, "Overview of this Generation and Adolescent Development."? We hope you will attend the Thursday, September 27th workshop from 6:30-8:00 in the PJHS library.

????? Looking for some reading on adolescents and bullying?? Check out Barbara Coloroso's book, The Bully, the Bullied and the Bystander.? Coloroso is nationally recognized for her research into bullying and how to positively affect the behavior of bullies and strengthen the resiliency of targets.

????? Please remember that Petaluma City Schools' district policy requires that junior high students attending high school events must be accompanied by an adult.

????? Thank you and I hope you and your student have a great year!

Nancy Emanuele

Proposition 30

The Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act of 2012

????? The initiative proposes to temporarily increase income taxes on high-wage earners and the state sales tax.? Income taxes would increase 3 percent on households earning more than $1 million, increase 2 percent on households earning $600,000-$1 million and increase 1 percent on households earning $500,000-$600,000.? The state sales tax would increase a quarter of a cent.? The sales tax hike expires in four years; income taxes expire in seven years.? Estimates of the revenue increases vary from $6.8 billion to $9 billion for 2012-13 and from $5.4 billion to $7.6 billion, on average; lesser amounts in 2018-19.? These revenues would be available to (1) pay for the state's school and community college funding requirements, as increased by this measure, and (2) address the state's budgetary problem by paying for other spending commitments.? The measure bars use of funds for administrative costs, but provides local schools governing board's discretion to decide, in open meetings and subject to annual audit, how funds are to be spent.

????????? Prop 30 is a balanced solution that will reduce the budget deficit and protect schools and students from deeper cuts.? After several years of massive cuts, this initiative helps balance California's state budget without raising income taxes on those hit hardest by the recession.

????????? If Prop 30 fails in November, public education faces more than $5 billion in additional cuts next year.? California schools have the largest class sizes in the nation.? In many districts, art, music, vocational education, athletics, and after-school programs have been eliminated.

????????? Prop 30 guarantees that new revenue for education will be spent on schools at the local level.? It also requires transparency through a public audit.

????????? In the past four years, public education has been cut by more than $20 billion, class sizes have soared at all grade levels, more than 40,000 educators have been laid off, and arts have been eliminated.

????????? State college and university fees have increased more than 300 percent, pricing many students out of obtaining a degree, while students at community colleges find it increasingly difficult to get the classes they need.

????????? Prop. 30 is supported by a broad coalition that includes the governor, legislators, educators, labor unions, community groups, and businesses.

????????? It is time to reevaluate how California funds schools and essential public services and to provide adequate per-pupil funding to ensure all California students have the opportunity for quality education.

?

Specific Impacts on Petaluma City Schools:

????????? Over the last five years Petaluma City Schools has made budget cuts of over $10,000,000, which includes eight days of work and pay for all employees (this includes the reduction of five days of school).

????????? Five years of no Cost Of Living Adjustments and cuts from the State have caused the State to withhold more than 22% of the funding to school districts.? Base Revenue Limits is the largest funding source for school districts.

????????? In anticipation of Proposition 30 passing, the State did not cut school districts for 2012/13

????????? If Proposition 30 fails in November, the State will cut Petaluma City Schools funding by over $3,300,000 in January; the State will allow School Districts to negotiate a cut to the school year by an additional 15 days, down to 160 school days in 2012-13 or 2013-14.? This will be down from 180 days that had been the minimum until five years ago when the State allowed districts to cut five days to help manage significant cuts to their funding.

Counseling Corner

WELCOME TO PETALUMA JR. HIGH!

????? The counselors would like to welcome both incoming 7th graders and new and returning 8th graders.? We hope you had a safe and fun summer!? Below you will find some information about some of the programs we have at PJHS as well as some ideas to help your student be successful.

????? If you would like more information or have questions, please contact your counselor? ??????????

Ms. Horwitz, (last name starts with) A-K counselor at 778-4730

Mr. Podbereski, L-Z counselor at 778-4729

?

To students:

1.?????? Have a regular place to do homework:? Be sure your place is quiet, well lit, well supplied and organized.? When you get home from school, empty and organize your backpack.? Save all your completed assignments in a box for future reference (study for tests, etc?).

2.?????? Get into a homework routine:? Plan to do your homework around the same time every day and stick to it. 1 ? 1 ? hours of homework each night is not uncommon.?

3.?????? Use your planner: This is the single most important tool for success.? Be sure to write down your daily and long-term assignments each day.? When you get home, check to see what's due the next day as well as in the future.? Work a little each day on long-term assignments so that you don't have to do a big project at the last minute.

4.?????? Ask for help: If you find that you are struggling in a particular class, ask for help.? There are many ways to get help with schoolwork.? You can ask your teacher, an aide, or a classmate.

?

To parents:

1.?????? Stay involved:? Parent involvement in middle grades is just as important as it was in elementary school.? Communicate with your child's teachers, attend back-to-school night, volunteer at dances, join PTSA, attend PTSA and ELAC meetings and volunteer to tutor in the library after school.? Students whose parents stay involved do better in school.

2.?????? Access the PJHS website, www.petalumajuniorhigh.org, to 1) read the principal's newsletter which contains important information (sent home with students also), 2) read the daily bulletin,? 3) click "staff" to connect with teacher websites and e-mail addresses, and 4) access the Parent Portal for homework info.

3.?????? Check your child's planner and homework nightly:? Be sure s/he is getting work completed and accurately.

4.?????? Communicate with your child's teachers and counselor:? Don't hesitate to call or e-mail teachers if you find that your child is struggling in a class.? And, keep in touch with the counselor if there are personal issues your child is struggling with.? We are here to help.

English Department News

????? Wow! The first semester is off to a fast start! In the English department, most of the first few weeks of school are spent setting up and practicing good work habits. These practices vary from teacher to teacher and include such tasks as using manuscript form, daily reading and/or journal writing, and taking quizzes about classroom policies.

????? At home, families can help perpetuate these habits by setting up a consistent place and time for doing homework, daily review of the student's planner, and discussion of syllabi and letters from teachers.?

????? Another important habit to establish is staying current on what is going on in English class. Please frequently check the PJHS web site, teacher web pages, Aeries Parent Connect, the homework hotlines, and/or email for information on department events, class assignments, and your child's grades. If questions arise, please contact your child's teacher by either email or a phone call.

????? Thank you for all you do to help your child learn as much as is humanly possible.

?

Sincerely,

The English Department

Mr. Day, Ms. Sullivan, Ms. Miller, Ms. Mantoani, Ms. Jimenez, Mrs. Fillipo, Mrs. Salzano, and Ms. Kneeland

History Department News

????? The History Department is excited about the 2012-2013 school year and is pleased to introduce Mrs. Hilda Abate and Ms. Allison Schermerhorn our new 7th grade World History teachers. Mrs. Abate has been with the District for eight years and this is Ms. Schermerhorn's first year with Petaluma City Schools.? Both are excellent teachers and we feel fortunate to have them on our campus.

????? Along with Mrs. Abate and Ms. Schermerhorn, Mrs. Nelson will explore the Medieval World starting with our Landforms Unit.? The culminating project for this unit is the "Make Your Own Continent" in which students design a continent with 46 landforms colored according to their elevation key.? Eighth grade teachers, Mr. Murphy and Mr. Lamansky, will study The United States through Industrialism and have started their units with the founding of the thirteen colonies and what lead to their clear independence.

????? Both the 7th and 8th grades use the History Alive! textbook.? This text was developed by middle school teachers at the Teachers' Curriculum Institute (TCI) and has been endorsed by Kate Kinsella and other renowned educational leaders. Many of our elementary feeder schools use TCI and students are already familiar with the interactive text and simulations throughout the curriculum.? The TCI approach to learning involves students in many exciting activities to bring History Alive!

????? We look forward to a productive and auspicious school year.

Independent Living/Culinary Arts News

????? Independent Living and Culinary Arts classes are?"cooking up a storm"?in room F-1 this year. Thanks to the generosity of many parents, the classes have been processing pounds of pears, zucchini, peaches, blackberries, and other produce for use in the cooking unit this month. Students have taken their utensil quizzes in Independent Living. All students have made breakfast burritos, black bean tostizzas, and next week will complete pasta primavera. The Culinary classes have also made bruschetta.

????? Our next unit in Independent Living classes is Interior Design. All students will be designing their?"Dream Bedrooms."?They must include samples of all surfaces, as well as a cost analysis of all furniture and materials. Students love this project. Most want pools, hot tubs, and basketball courts included into the bedroom design. Any Interior Designers out there? We would love some of your old design boards, and perhaps have you come in as a guest speaker.?

The Culinary Garden

????? Many changes are happening in the Culinary Garden, and many volunteer opportunities await parents.

????? The renovation of the garden is halfway complete; thanks to so many generous grants and donations from community businesses. This summer, Dave Martin and his crew from Creedence Construction volunteered their labor to construct a beautiful 10x10 garden shed to house the collection of garden items that has been previously cluttering the Culinary classroom. Mead Clark provided materials at or below cost, and our cookbook fundraiser from last fall allowed us to purchase materials. Thank you, Dave, Creedence, and Mead Clark!

????? Two grants were obtained, just recently, to boost us closer to our goal of building an outdoor amphitheater and stairs to reach the lower garden area. We were recently awarded a $500.00 grant from Kiwanis of Petaluma, and another $1500 from the 2011-2012 Leadership Class of the Petaluma Chamber of Commerce to help us along!

????? At present, tomatoes, rhubarb, and zucchini abound. We are frantically roasting, blanching, chopping and freezing our precious bounty for use in Independent Living and Culinary classes throughout the school year. Our production garden saves us approximately $1000 in grocery bills per year, and nothing goes to waste.

????? Our fall garden work day will be held this year on Saturday, September 22nd?from 9-12:00. Please bring your hammers, drills, pruners, shovels, weed-whacker, and chainsaw to help us trim bushes and trees, dig the hillside for stairs, and build a composting station. If your child is enrolled in Independent Living, Life Skills, or Culinary Arts, they will receive bonus points for your efforts.

????? Volunteers can call Charlene Nugent at 778-4724 or email at?cnugent@petk12.org.

Library News

????? I always enjoy starting the new school year in our beautiful library.? The library was completed in July 2010, thanks to a bond measure passed many years ago. Our students love the library!

????? All sixth and seventh grade students receive an orientation on how to use the library during the first weeks of school. Eighth grader refresher orientations are in progress to review using the library catalog and finding books on the shelf. For all grades, I review a selection of books that they might be interested in, and many students check out these books.

?

***Overdue library books***

????? One area where I really need parent assistance is in getting students to return their library books on time. Students stamp their books with the due date when they check them out, and usually receive a notice in class if books are overdue. Fines of 10 cents per school day are charged on overdue books.

????? Expect a letter from us if the book is still not returned. If there is still no response, your student will receive lunch detentions until the book is returned or paid for. Even if you think you have resolved the problem by sending a book or a check, your student may be still carrying something around in his or her backpack that has not reached the library.

????? You may wonder why junior high and high schools charge overdue fines. As I am sure you know it is difficult to get students this age to do things like return books unless there is a consequence. I do allow students to work off their fines and charges for lost books by working in the library.

????? If your student thinks they have lost a library book, I have a detailed list of suggested places to look. Remember that library books have a label on their spine.

***Tutoring Program***

????? We ran a very successful tutoring program during the last two years thanks to parent volunteers, with up to 24 students in the library after school. Lori Krist, parent of ninth grader Robert and sixth grader Tyler, was the volunteer who kept our program going along with me. Unfortunately, her teaching schedule this year will no longer allow her to tutor. In order to restart after school tutoring this school year, I?need a minimum of two volunteers working together for an hour after school on the same afternoon.? So far I only have one maybe. Tutoring volunteers?need to be able to come on a regular basis. Contact me or volunteer coordinator Tricia DeCarli if you are interested.

????? Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or your student needs any assistance.

How to Help Obese Teens

????? This article is a portion of an article published in the San Francisco Chronicle on Monday, June 4, 2012 titled, "Oakland, Stanford Programs Tackle Teen Obesity," by Erin Allday, San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.? This is reprinted with permission from the author, by Karen Andresen, PJHS Teacher Librarian. The full article is available on the San Francisco Chronicle's web site, sfgate.com.

????? In the United States, hundreds of programs like Healthy Hearts and a Stanford clinic have sprung up in recent years. They are designed to help obese teenagers whose weight is putting them at risk of developing chronic conditions, like heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. These programs target what doctors consider an especially vulnerable, and difficult to treat, population. Often, their goal isn't even weight loss, but weight maintenance - to help the kids stop gaining - while doctors and patients attack some of the more problematic symptoms of chronic?disease.

????? Dr. Lydia Tinajero-Deck and other doctors who specialize in treating teenagers said it's clear why kids in this age group are at risk of gaining weight and developing the earliest signs of chronic?disease. Teens can be impulsive and a little reckless, and they don't always put much thought into the long-term consequences of everyday decisions - from what they'll eat to whether they'll go for a walk or watch TV after school. Many of them don't get enough exercise, either in organized sports or P.E. classes at?school.

And then there are the self-esteem issues. Almost every teenager goes through a period of faltering confidence, and a weight problem may only make matters worse. That's why many physicians said they talk to teens about improving their health, not losing?weight.

????? "Success with weight-management programs with teens - it's been patchy," said Dr. Padmaja Padalkar, "The best way to reach out to teens is to allow them to dictate what it is they can work on and what they can't. We try to set very, very small goals for these patients. Any small step is a step in the right?direction."

????? Most of the teen weight-loss programs involve entire families - with the idea that kids are going to need all the support they can get - and preach the basics of good nutrition and?exercise.

In the Healthy Hearts program, patients and their families participate for six months, during which they have monthly doctor appointments, plus meetings with nutritionists and a variety of health and fitness experts.

Health And Fitness Tips To Kickstart Your Metabolism | Diets That ...

Thank you for your visit.. Please LIKE us to unlock this blog contents!

You may, like many other people, not be someone who is naturally physically fit. It can be hard to begin a fitness routine if you do not know how to properly do it. Guidance is key towards getting into shape. The following tips do a great job on both counts, which means you won?t have to wait long before you can start an excellent new fitness program.

Raising your stride speed while running should be your biggest goal if you are planning on running a sprint. You may try to run faster by stretching out your front leg when you run. However, when your front foot lands it should be in line with your torso. Pushing off with the toes of your rear leg will propel you forward. With a bit of practice you will succeed at this!

When you have to workout for a long time, you have to keep yourself hydrated. Start hydrating an hour before your workout and take breaks periodically to hydrate during your workout as well.

Read on for a way to get exercise while watching tv. As soon as the commercials com on, start doing some quick exercises such as jumping jacks or running in place.

TIP! A terrific thing to incorporate into your healthy diet is yogurt. Yogurt is known to have a lot of health benefits including promoting a healthier digestive system.

Look around online for home fitness routines in addition to attending fitness courses offered through local colleges or community centers. You could contact a local sports medicine clinic for referrals.

A great fitness routine includes using dumbbells and also bench with barbells. It is important that you choose the correct type of bench. Remember that if you can feel the wood against your back, it probably is not a good bench. The incorrect type of bench can weaken your spine.

Including more fruit into your diet will increase your fitness and health levels. Eating a diet that is filled with nutritious fruit and vegetables will improve your health.

When you exercise, remember to exhale after each repetition. This causes your body to expend more energy and inhaling air will give your body more energy as well.

TIP! The best fitness routines target your problem areas and allow you plenty of flexibility. Search for fitness classes in your surrounding area.

Try box squats to increase the size of your quadriceps. If you want to get more power by doing squats try the box squat variety. Put a box behind you and get going. Then simply perform a normal squat but stop and hold it when you are positioned right over the box.

You can get your fitness plans off to a good start by taking a walk with your dog. Most dogs even love to go for long jogs. Take it slow. Circle one or two blocks and work your way up from there. Having a companion is one of the benefits of owning a dog.

Test the bench before you use it for a workout. Apply pressure to the bench with your thumb to test for adequate padding. If the metal or the wood is all you feel underneath the bench, it?s recommended that you find a different one.

When you?ve been injured, start exercising as soon as possible. Of course, be easy on the muscles you?ve injured. You can actually promote healing of injured muscles with very low intensity exercise. Some exercise will stretch the injured muscles and help blood circulation in the affected area.

TIP! Volunteering with school fitness programs shows your kids that fitness is important. By showing an interest you may find that your kids become more involved in the exercise available.

Exercise outdoors to get the most out of Mother Nature while also enjoying a good workout. Go for a hike, take a jog on the beach, or run up and down a large set of stairs. Not only will you get a great workout, but you will also be rejuvenated. The outdoor essence will lower your stress and help you think clearly.

Improve the health of your heart. A lot of extra strain is put on your heart if you are not at a healthy weight. Exercise and fitness will improve the health of your heart and keep your weight in check. You must adjust your diet too. Cut down on your overall calorie intake, eat less saturated fat, and add plenty vegetables and fiber.

Use everything you learned today to take initiative towards getting into shape. It could take some getting used to, but when you start feeling better, you will see it is worth it. Getting fit and staying fit is one of the best ways to keep your body and mind healthy, so take action right now!

People in the past always used to use weight belts during their weight lifting sessions, but nowadays the trends are to only use it for very heavy weight. You may find that a weight belt that is worn constantly has its drawbacks. It can lead to weaker core muscles, which can lead to injury.

TIP! Even the most basic exercises are able to strengthen your core. Sit-ups are still a great way to improve your core.

Northwestern Wildfires Spotted from Space

It's been a bad summer for wildfires, and even with autumn's cooler temperatures approaching, the fires still burn.

NASA's Aqua satellite captured images of several large fires burning in the Northwest on Sept. 17. Smoke can be seen billowing from the blazes in the image and red outlines show where the fires burn the hottest.

Some of the blazes, like the Halstead and Mustang Complex fires in Idaho, have been burning for months. Others, like the Sheep and Pole Creek fires (in Idaho and Oregon, respectively), were ignited in the past couple weeks.

Montana's Dugan fire, pictured in a second image obtained by Aqua on Sept. 15, was discovered in Custer National Forest last week. That image also shows towering pyrocumulus clouds that formed after the fire's intense heat pushed air high into the atmosphere. Pyrocumulus clouds sometimes generate intense thunderstorms that can either dampen the flames with drenching rains or propel the fire with strong winds.

Wildfires raged through Colorado and throughout the Southwest earlier this summer, before shifting west and north. As of yesterday, Washington, Montana and Idaho were the hardest hit states, with 19 large active fires between the three, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

The fires leave a scorched landscape behind them, as can be seen in satellite photos of the Bagley fire, which charred 72 square miles (186 square kilometers) of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest near Big Bend, Calif., this summer.

The size and frequency of wildfires has increased significantly in the western United States over the last few decades due to climate change and changing forestry practices, according to NASA. Climate change has decreased winter snow cover, quickened the arrival of spring and intensified heat waves in the region ? all of which add to fire risk.

Decades of fire suppression have also left denser forests and abundant fuel on the ground that cause fires to spread easily.

The 2012 wildfire season will likely break the U.S. record for the largest area burned, set in 2006 when more than 13,745 square miles (35,600 square km) were torched. The National Interagency Fire Center has been keeping records since 1960.

As of yesterday (Sept. 18), there were 27 large fires burning across seven states, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Fires have chewed through 13,094 square miles (33.913 square km), an area larger than the state of Maryland. That's above the 10-year average for this date, which is 10,119 square miles (26,207 square km).

Fingerprint Time Attendance Devices: Biometric technology at a ...

Internet and Technology | Data Recovery | * Written by Noah Heinle | Wednesday, 19 September 2012 02:42 | Word Count: 410

Many organizations realize the value of biometrics for employee verification, yet never move to utilize the technology because of concerns related to cost.? This concern is becoming more and more a fallacy as fingerprint time clocks have led the charge in significantly decreasing the entry-level price point of biometric devices. For those organizations unsure about the value of biometrics, there are two main advantages compared to using ID cards, PINs, logins or other manual time entry methods: accuracy and security. ? By indisputably linking an event, i.e. clock in or cost center change, to the specific employee, there is no room for ambiguity. The integrity of the data is undoubted, and fraud or time theft like buddy punching is completely eliminated.

Security is interrelated with this data accuracy. If you have your timekeeping devices doubling as access control devices, biometrics ensure only those supposed to use designated entrances will be allowed to do so. If you don?t have any access control in place, at least your time and attendance system will be able to produce an accurate real-time display of everyone who is currently ?on-the-clock,? an invaluable tool for unexpected emergency situations.

The allure of fingerprint time attendance devices is that these benefits of biometrics can be achieved for the same cost as traditional timeclocks, and in some cases even less.? Recommended models that fit this price point include those from ZK Technologies.

If you?re in the market for a fingerprint time attendance device, it?s important to know that the timeclock is independently ?dumb,? meaning it is really the time and attendance software that brings the device to life.? That is why the same model available at Costco and eBay is slightly less expensive than the one from a reputable time and attendance vendor.? The best time and attendance providers supply fingerprint devices preconfigured and customized to work with their software.? Without the right software, these devices won?t do much for providing real-time timekeeping, reporting and analytics.? Another plus: the warranty and technical support offered by your solution provider will be infinitely superior to that Costco purchase.

Keep in mind: the less costly fingerprint devices are intended for clean office environments.? Less sanitary conditions, such as those found in manufacturing plants, are better served by timeclocks that offer greater durability and readability.? Recommended models for these types of workplaces are produced by Accu-Time and Schlage.

Datamatics offers biometric time and attendance and finger print time attendance system with a quality selection of biometrics which verifies an employee via hand, finger, or iris. Biometric time clocks are the ultimate means of validating an employee's presence and identity.

How to Demonstrate Your Expertise Even When You Have No Proof

Like this? Share with friends.

Recently, I was asked a question I receive somewhat frequently and I thought the answer might apply to others in the same boat so I?ll share it here.

The question was this ? How do I demonstrate that I can help a prospect when I have no proof ? no case studies, testimonials or clients yet?

Lots of people find themselves in this situation when they are just getting started, go in a new direction or even open up an office in a new community.

The answer these days rests in working these 3Ps ? Publish, Partner and Podium.

The best way to prove you have something of value to share is to share it. That?s true whether you?re just getting started or you?re an established leader in your field. In fact, you can always rely on these 3Ps as you build your business, but there?s no question they are the launching point when your have no customer stories to add further documented proof.

Publish

  • Start sharing your expertise and point of view on your own blog
  • Offer to write guest blog posts for blogs related to your industry or read by your ideal prospective client
  • Join active LinkinIn groups in your community and share freely
  • Follow relevant topics on Quora and share thoughts, opinions and answers to questions posed there

Partner

  • Seek out other businesses that serve your ideal client and find ways to offer them value
  • Offer to write guest posts for their blogs
  • Create an eBook and offer to share it with their community
  • Create an educational workshop and offer to share it with their community
  • Offer to provide a low or no cost service as an add on trial
  • Create gift certificates that your partners can give away freely

Podium

  • Create a valuable and compelling presentation on a topic that will draw interest from your target client
  • Seek out groups, no matter how large or targeted, and start presenting your point of view (More speaking comes from some speaking)
  • Go back to your partners and offer to present to their audience
  • Schedule Google Hangouts and create YouTube and Facebook videos and start sharing valuable tips and ideas in these networks.

Building your reputation and community through this path takes time and patience, but it?s the surest way to create a strong foundation and attract the right kind of client.

If you?re still in the ?thinking? stages of your start up, don?t wait, start using the 3Ps right now so you can begin to build some momentum before you?re wondering where your first sale is going to come from.

Chemical BPA Linked to Obesity in Children

White children exposed to high levels of bisphenol A are five times more likely to be obese than peers with low levels of the chemical, according to new research

White children exposed to high levels of bisphenol A are five times more likely to be obese than children with low levels, according to a study published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The study by New York University scientists is the first to link the chemical to obesity in children. Previous research reported links in adults and animals.

?This is a great example of a health study that is consistent with studies in animals, and it also confirms what we?ve seen in adult populations,? said Frederick vom Saal, a University of Missouri-Columbia professor who studies bisphenol A (BPA) but was not part of the new study. ?That gives the findings much greater weight and strengthens this link we keep seeing between BPA and obesity.?

Traces of BPA ? used in some canned food and beverages, paper receipts and dental sealants ? are found in virtually every U.S. adult and child.

In the study of body mass and BPA data from 2,838 youths aged 6 to 19, only white children were found to have significant increases in obesity prevalence as their BPA levels increased. Those with the highest concentrations in their urine were five times more likely to be obese than children with the lowest levels.

Black children with higher BPA levels were 1.25 times more likely to be obese than those with lower levels, which the scientists said is not statistically significant. Hispanic children had the same rates of obesity at the highest and lowest levels.?

?Neither Hispanic (Mexican American and other Hispanic) or non-Hispanic black children had a significantly increased risk of obesity with elevated concentrations of urinary BPA,? the authors wrote in the journal article.
It is unclear why BPA levels were so strongly associated with obesity in white children.

?There were no dietary differences specific to whites,? said Dr. Leonardo Trasande, an associate professor in pediatrics, environmental medicine and health policy at NYU?s School of Medicine who was lead author of the paper. ?It is possible that there is some genetic interaction that may be specific to the (white) population ... but we don?t know.?

It?s also possible, he said, that higher rates of obesity in the Hispanic and black children ? 23 and 24 percent, respectively, compared with 15 percent of white children ? made it more difficult to tease out a link between the chemicals and obesity in those groups.

Representatives of the chemical industry said the study had too many weaknesses to prove a connection.

Steven Hentges, from the American Chemistry Council's Polycarbonate/BPA Global Group,?said that attempts "to link our national obesity problem to minute exposures to chemicals found in common, everyday products are a distraction from the real efforts underway to address this important national health issue."

The median BPA urinary concentration for children in the study was 2.8 nanograms per milliliter, slightly higher than the median for U.S. adults, according to a 2008 national survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The highest group of children had concentrations at least double that.

Experts suspect that diet is the most frequent route of exposure for children. One study of 257 preschoolers in North Carolina and Ohio found that 99 percent of BPA exposure was through food. But national data is lacking and it is hard to pinpoint exposure since the chemical is in many plastics and other products.

The study adds to the evidence that certain industrial chemicals ? called obesogens ? may be in part spurring the obesity problem in the U.S.

?People are always told if you just stop eating or exercise more, you will lose weight. But there may be more to it ? and I think there is,? said Retha Newbold, a visiting scientist at National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences who specializes in BPA and other endocrine disrupting chemicals.

Entertaining With Excellent China

Author (mindicarico556). Submitted on Tue, 18 Sep 2012

If you are somebody that enjoys entertaining, it is likely that you considered the possibility of throwing a dinner party in the past. These can range from very simplistic parties where you will have an intimate gathering of family and friends to more extravagant gatherings that will require quite a bit of work on your part. Of course, all of us like to be well fed during such a party but there are many things that also go into the evening event that take place behind the scenes. Here's how to make sure that you throw the perfect dinner party that your guests are going to love.

One important part of the party that should not be overlooked is the setting of the table. This can be done in any number of different ways and you might be surprised with the diversity of what you can do, even if you have one particular style that you use. It may be to your benefit to look for some Juliska dinnerware or perhaps some Jan Barboglio designs that will help you to feel comfortable with what you're doing. One thing is certain, having the table set properly is going to help everybody enjoy the meal all that much more. Here are some specifics of what you can do.

The first thing which needs to be considered when setting the table is the centerpiece. The reason why that is the case, is because it is going to set the mood for the entire table. There are some centerpieces that can be purchased in your local area but you may also want to consider designing one as well. Just make sure that it is large enough to really set off a dinner table without being so large that it keeps people from seeing each other because it is blocking the view.

Most people are aware of the fact that forks go on the left and knives and spoons go on the right. One easy way for you to remember this if you always need to look it up in advance is the fact that four and left both have four letters. Incidentally, knife, spoon and right all have five letters. If you are going to be setting out multiple kinds or forks, have the larger forks closer to the plate and then the smaller forks trailing according to size away from the plate.

Now that the table is ready, make sure that you give it a dry run in advance of throwing the party. You may also want to set it up during the day so that it will be ready before anyone arrives. You can then concentrate on the food and the other aspects of the evening that are going to help to make it special. Look for the perfect wine complement in advance and the mood is going to be right for the theme of the party. The more thought that you put into a party in advance, the more people are going to enjoy what it offers to them. It is something they will talk about for many years to come.

South Africa: Lonmin miners ready to resume work

Striking miners have accepted a company offer of a 22% overall pay increase to end more than five weeks of crippling and bloody industrial action. (AP Photo/Themba Hadebe)

(AP) ? Lonmin miners celebrated a wage deal Wednesday that ended a deadly and prolonged strike but labor unrest continued with police firing rubber bullets and tear gas at strikers at a different platinum mine.

Some warned that the deal struck by Lonmin to give its 28,000 workers up to 22 percent pay raises would incite other miners to similar action. Lonmin also employs 10,000 contract workers not covered by the agreement.

"It sets a dangerous precedent and illegal actions to enforce wage increases could occur at other mines in future," said Gideon du Plessis, head of the mainly white Solidarity mining union.

The Lonmin agreement reached Tuesday night does not resolve the union rivalry that was at the heart of the violence, nor the class struggle that it exposed between a small, politically connected black elite and the majority of impoverished South Africans who feel the government has failed to keep its promise of a better life for all.

And the political and economic fallout likely will hurt the re-election campaign of South African President Jacob Zuma, whom miners blame for the police shootings of 112 striking miners, which killed 34 on Aug. 16. The total number of those who died during the strike rose to 46 Wednesday when a woman died in hospital after being shot on Saturday when police raided the Wonderkop settlement, according to mediator Bishop Joe Seoka.

At the Lonmin mine at Marikana, the world's third largest platinum mine, thousands gathered and sang the national anthem in piercing heat, holding up umbrellas to block the sun. Workers cheered and laughed as they walked into the mine stadium. Many hurt by the no-work, no-pay stoppage said they would be happy to return to work Thursday.

Lonmin agreed to a gross pay of 11,078 rand ($1,385) for rock drill operators who had been demanding a monthly take-home wage of 12,500 rand ($1,560). They also agreed to give all miners a 2,000 rand ($250) bonus for returning to work. A statement from the company said that miners will receive between 11 and 22 percent wage increases.

"If everyone is happy with the money, I am also happy with them because I am here to work for my children," said miner Stan Chayisa.

"I am so happy," said Mvenyeza Luhlaziyao, 48, a painter at the mines. "I try to forget the past and continue to move forward ... We must continue to build the company and management must listen to us in the future. People didn't care about us, that's why we decided to go on strike."

Zolisa Bodlani, one of the strike leaders, said the agreement is noteworthy. "If no people were killed, I'd say this was a great achievement," he said. "We've never in the history of South Africa had such an increase of pay as 22 percent."

Two wives of winch operators expressed their pleasure that the strike had ended. "The weeks without pay were terrible," said Plaxedes Matemba, a 39-year-old mother of two.

"It will make life better for us," she said of the pay raise. "We expect better changes again ... there will be no more provoking, no more noise, no more beatings," she said.

Still, many expressed anger toward the government, questioning Zuma's leadership as he prepares for a crucial governing party congress in December that will decide whether he gets another term as leader of Africa's richest economy.

They "brought the police to shoot us, so I don't believe the current president of South Africa should be the president again. There must be change," said miner Michael Maleswa.

Another, Johannes Hlkela, said "I don't believe he (Zuma) should be president again because of the way he has killed people like animals."

Strikers had spoken against the huge economic inequality and the government's failure to address massive unemployment and poverty. Most Lonmin miners live in tin shacks without water or electricity.

The strike has highlighted the country's widening gap between the majority poor and a small black elite enriched, often corruptly, through shares in mines.

Government plans in the aftermath of the brutal apartheid regime to share the wealth of a country that provides 75 percent of the world's platinum, a fourth of its chrome and is in the top 10 of gold producers have made a small handful of blacks billionaires, joining a small white elite that continues to control an economy dominated by mineral resources and agriculture.

The exuberant crowd at Lonmin was addressed by Joseph Mathunjwa, president of the breakaway Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union that has poached thousands of members from the dominant, government-allied National Union of Mineworkers this year.

"From the 16th of August, you have known who are your proper leaders. Now you know who is the leader of the boardroom and who is the leader of the people," he said. "The right leader is the one who comes forth to its people without security or bodyguards to talk to its members. The leader who is afraid to come forth to workers or miners, he is afraid because he knows what he has done."

Many miners said they were angry at Zuma for not visiting the site of the police shootings when he belatedly came to address them.

The National Union of Mineworkers said the Lonmin deal will open the way for new demands from other miners."

Spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said the NUM will try to set up a forum with other mining companies.

"Of course this is going to set a precedent," he said. "We want the companies to come together into bargaining so that we can deal with this thing. The challenge is going to be whether the other companies will be able to do 22 percent."

At Anglo American Platinum's Amplats mine near Rustenburg, northwest of Johannesburg, some 400 to 500 strikers tried to march Wednesday. The workers at Amplats, the world's biggest platinum mine, have said that they are better paid than Lonmin strikers and want even more than the Lonmin strikers' demands for a monthly take-home salary of 12,500 rand ($1,560).

Police ordered the Amplats strikers to lay down their homemade weapons - machetes, spears and clubs. "Police asked them to disperse and when they wouldn't, police used tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd," said police spokesman Dennis Adriao. "We've said from the start that we would not tolerate illegal gatherings."

He said 19 people were arrested.

Zuma gave police the go-ahead for a crackdown on the strikers, further angering miners.

Anglo American Platinum spokeswoman Mpumi Sithole said all five mines in Rustenburg had reopened Tuesday. But she refused to say how many miners have returned to work. Anglo released a statement late Wednesday that said legal avenues may be pursued for workers who do not return by Thursday's night shift.

South Africa Press Association reported that the head of the Congress of South African Trade Unions, Zwelinzima Vavi, left the group's conference Wednesday to deal with a strike at Gold Fields' Driefontein mine in Carletonville. It said that 15,000 workers have been on an illegal strike for 10 days.

Vavi said the mineworkers were also demanding a salary of 12,500 rand, according to SAPA. He said of Lonmin: "If those workers forced the hand of the company in that fashion through an unprotected strike, what stops Driefontein in doing the same," according to SAPA, which also said that leaders from the National Union of Mineworkers went with Vavi to the mine.
