Gambling that their Meadowlands casino predictions come true ...

Friday?s topping-off ceremony at the Meadowlands Sports Complex was mainly about the new racetrack grandstand that will open in November.

But another sort of gambling was on the minds of most there, including track operator Jeff Gural, who said, ?Someday a casino will be here, I hope.?

Two elected officials, meanwhile, immortalized their sentiments on the final beam that was about to be put into place, as recorded by our photographer Marko Georgiev:

full-size link is here.

?Let?s have casinos,? wrote Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, D-Essex.

?I will be back for the casino steel erection!? wrote state Sen. Paul Sarlo, D-Wood-Ridge.

Both men have consistently pushed in Trenton for a Meadowlands casino, though they have been rebuffed so far by fellow Democrat and state Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Gloucester ? who also attended the ceremony ? as well as Governor Christie.

Walt Disney World adds taste of 'Food and Wine' to Epcot ...

When Walt Disney World first added HGTV stars to the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival a few years ago, the line between that popular annual event and the park?s Flower and Garden Festival began to blur. This year Disney takes a giant step further in almost combining these two happenings by adding a Garden Marketplace throughout the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival, offering unique food and drinks around the World Showcase promenade.

It all takes place daily March 6 ? May 19, 2013, included with Epcot park admission. Among amazing topiaries and gardens, the new food-and-beverage Garden Marketplaces will add taste to the sensory experience of attending this event. A total of 11 marketplaces will show off unique flavors in a familiar format to anyone who has attended the Food and Wine Festival.

The menu includes marketplaces like Smokehouse Barbecue and Brew?at American Adventure courtyard, Florida Fresh, Primavera Kitchen?at Italy, and Hanami at Japan. But the most popular items may very well be the drinks, particularly the alcoholic options, with the stand out being a twist on a Magic Kingdom and Disneyland fan favorite: Dole Whip with Spiced Rum.

Here?s a sampling of other options that will be available:

Fresh Waterkist Farms Heirloom Tomatoes are paired with house-made Mozzarella, Minus 8 Vinegar and fresh Basil to create a mouth-watering dish at The Cottage: Savories, Trifles and Tea garden marketplace by the United Kingdom Pavilion.

The new Florida Fresh garden marketplace features Shrimp and Stone Ground Grits with Andouille Sausage, fresh Zellwood Corn, Tomatoes and Cilantro.

Florida Fresh garden marketplace also melds fresh flavors to offer Watermelon Salad with pickled Red Onions, Baby Arugula, Feta Cheese and Balsamic Reduction.

Garden gnome Mickey Mouse, nestled in a bed of berry plants at Epcot, eyes a sweet dish ? Angel Food Cake with macerated Florida Berries ? to be featured at the new Florida Fresh garden marketplace.

Savory goodness of a Pulled Pig Slider with Cole Slaw will be featured at The Smokehouse: Barbecue and Brews marketplace in The American Adventure Courtyard.

And what of the drinks?

Fresh fruits, herbs and veggies inspire a menu of cocktails and non-alcoholic ?mocktails? for guests, such as the Chilled Rose Blush Lemonade (The Cottage marketplace near UK pavilion), Frozen Desert Violet Lemonade (Pineapple Promenade marketplace) and Strawberry Slush (Florida Fresh marketplace).

There?s also a Watermelon Passion Fruit Cocktail, Orange Blossom Pilsner (both Florida Fresh marketplace) and Blueberry Blue wine (Fruits by the Glass marketplace).

Florida watermelon and sugar cane make a statement as ingredients in the Watermelon Passion Fruit Cocktail served with Cane Vodka from Florida Distillery LLC featured at the Florida Fresh garden marketplace.

Heading the teams creating and installing the marketplaces are Beverage Manager Marianne Hunnel, Epcot Executive Chef Jens Dahlmann and Festival Horticulture Manager Eric Darden.

Beyond the food and drink offerings, a variety of new experiences will also be included in the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival this year:

  • A new, circus-like??Land of Oz??play area based on the Disney fantastical film adventure ?Oz: The Great and Powerful? to be released March 8, 2013. The interactive children?s play zone will feature play systems adorned with giant flowers and designed to stretch kids? imaginations and muscles. Midway-style games, red-and-white circus-themed tents and the ?Oz Movie Garden? of intriguing plants will capture the spirit of the upcoming film.? Also on tap: photo opportunities and the ?great and powerful Oz?s? crashed hot-air balloon.?Imagination Walkway
  • Larger-than-life?Fab Five Disney character topiary.? Floral versions of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Pluto and Donald Duck (with Daisy Duck in a cameo) star in a celebratory cookout scene in living topiary color. The 14-foot-tall Goofy topiary will bobble an anniversary cake while Donald and Daisy play badminton, Mickey fires up the grill, Pluto swipes a link of hot dogs and Minnie chills out on a colorful blanket of blossoms.?Epcot Front Entrance
  • Illuminated Gardens?in the park?s Future World and World Showcase will twinkle and glow over the festival?s world-famous Disney gardens and topiaries each festival evening.?Epcot Future World and World Showcase
  • Throughout the 75-day garden party, festival surprises will include new topiaries, children?s play areas, HGTV celebrity designers, daily hands-on gardening seminars and a Festival Center packed with events, as well as top Flower Power rockers of the 1960s and ?70s performing.

Every Friday through Sunday, HGTV design celebrities will host Festival Center seminars.? During opening weekend, March 8-10, Chris Lambton of ?Going Yard? will appear; other designers scheduled to take the stage include David Bromstad of ?Color Splash? and Meg Caswell of ?Meg?s Great Rooms.?

    More festival highlights include:

Help! Too many crocodiles, S.Africa police say

This photo taken Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013 shows some of the recaptured crocodiles back safely on the farm they escaped from, at Pontdrif, South Africa, near the Botswana border. About 7,000 of the creatures escaped when the gates on a dam were opened this week to alleviate pressure created by rising flood waters. About 2,000 had been recaptured Friday, Jan. 25, 2013. JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Calling all crocodile experts ? South African police say you're needed to help capture thousands of crocs out on the lam.

Thousands of crocodiles escaped a breeding farm along a river on the South Africa-Botswana border when the farms' gates were opened earlier this week to alleviate pressure caused by rising flood waters.

Efforts are now being made to wrangle the reptiles and get them back to the Rakwena Crocodile Farm, from where the vast majority escaped. Hangwani Mulaudzi, a spokesman for the police in Limpopo Province, said Friday that experts are needed right away to help sort out the crocodile crisis.

"Due to the number of crocodiles that have been washed away there is a need for expertise, people who have expertise to come and assist," Mulaudzi said. "So we are just making appeals to anyone ... who has knowledge of catching crocodiles to come and assist."

News reports from the scene show people hunting down smaller crocodiles at night, tying them up and taking them back to the Rakwena Crocodile Farm in northern South Africa. The crocodiles are easier to hunt at night because their eyes glow when hit with a beam of light. The farm's website shows crocs up to 5 meters (16 feet) long, though crocs of all sizes escaped, Mulaudzi said.

It isn't clear exactly how many crocodiles are on the loose. Mulaudzi said he believes around 10,000 from multiple farms remain on the loose. Officials from the Rakwena Crocodile Farm have been quoted in conflicting South African media accounts as saying either 7,000 escaped or up to 15,000 escaped. The farm originally held about 15,000 crocs. About 2,000 crocodiles have been returned to the farm, Mulaudzi said. The farm did not respond to an email or calls seeking comment.

Regardless of the exact number of farm-raised crocs now touring the wild, government officials and experts are calling on people who live near the remote region, which sits on the Limpopo River, to be careful around bodies of water. Many of the crocodiles are assumed to now be residing in the river.

"So far we are lucky. There has not been any emergencies," said Mulaudzi. "And we are hopeful that nothing will happen. But with crocodiles all over in the river we are saying, please, we need assistance."

Donald Strydom, a wildlife expert at South Africa's Khamai Reptile Centre, said he doesn't think the croc release will lead to a loss of human life. People are aware of the situation, he said, and crocodiles don't naturally hunt humans.

"People must not go into a monster hunt and think these crocodiles are out to eat them," Styrdom told South Africa's eNews Channel Africa.

Mulaudzi said he did not think the Rakwena Crocodile Farm would face any charges from police for releasing the crocs, given the emergency nature of the flood. Flood waters are inundating northern South Africa and neighboring Mozambique. But Mulaudzi said the farm may face scrutiny from the Department of Environmental Affairs, which is helping with the reptile emergency.

The Rakwena Crocodile Farm website shows goods like crocodile-skin purses, belts and hats for sale. Crocodile meat is also available for purchase.

Diet, parental behavior, and preschool can boost children's IQ

Supplementing children's diets with fish oil, enrolling them in quality preschool, and engaging them in interactive reading all turn out to be effective ways to raise a young child's intelligence, according to a new report published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Using a technique called meta-analysis, a team led by John Protzko, a doctoral student at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, combined the findings from existing studies to evaluate the overall effectiveness of each type of intervention. In collaboration with NYU Steinhardt professors Joshua Aronson and Clancy Blair, leaders in the field of intelligence, Protzko analyzed the best available studies involving samples of children from birth and kindergarten from their newlyassembled "Database of Raising Intelligence."

"Our aim in creating this database is to learn what works and what doesn't work to raise people's intelligence," said Protzko. "For too long, findings have been disconnected and scattered throughout a wide variety of journals. The broad consensus about what works is founded on only two or three very high-profile studies."

All of the studies in this database rely on a normal population (participants without clinical diagnoses of intellectual disabilities), focus on interventions that are sustained over time, use widely accepted measures of intelligence, and, most importantly, are randomly controlled trials (participants selected at random to receive one of the interventions).

"The larger goal here is to understand the nature of intelligence, and if and how it can be nurtured at every stage of development," said Aronson, Protzko's advisor. "This is just a first step in a long process of understanding. It is by no means the last word. In fact, one of the main conclusions is how little high quality research exists in the field and how much more needs to be done."

Overall, the results of the meta-analyses indicated that certain dietary and environmental interventions can be effective in raising children's IQ.

Supplementing pregnant women and newborns with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, foods rich in Omega-3, were found to boost children's IQ by more than 3.5 points. These essential fatty acids may help raise intelligence by providing the building blocks for nerve cell development that the body cannot produce on its own.

There is insufficient research, however, to determine whether other types of supplements including iron, B-complex vitamins, riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, and zinc have beneficial effects on intelligence.

Enrolling an economically disadvantaged child into an early education intervention was found to raise his or her IQ by more than four points; interventions that specifically included a center-based education component raised a child's IQ by more than seven points.

The researchers hypothesize that early education interventions may help to raise children's IQ by increasing their exposure to complex environments that are cognitively stimulating and demanding. It's not clear, however, whether these results apply more broadly to kids from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

Surprisingly, Protzko, Aronson, and Blair found no evidence to support the idea that early education interventions that take place earlier in childhood are more effective than those that begin later.

Interventions focused on interactive reading teaching parents how to engage their children while reading with them were found to raise children's IQ by over 6 points. These interventions do not seem to have an effect for children over 4 years old, suggesting that the interventions may accelerate language development, which, in turn, boosts IQ.

Sending a child to preschool was found to raise his or her IQ by more than four points, and preschools that include a language development component were found to boost IQ by more than seven points. The link between preschool and intelligence could be a function of increased exposure to language or the result of the overall cognitive complexity of the preschool environment.

"Our current findings strengthen earlier conclusions that complex environments build intelligence, but do cast doubt on others, including evidence that earlier interventions are always most effective," Protzko explained. "Overall, identifying the link between essential fatty acids and intelligence gives rise to tantalizing new questions for future research and we look forward to exploring this finding."

Elusive giant squid is still a deep mystery

The recent unprecedented video footage of a giant squid filmed in its deep ocean habitat has renewed interest in the enormous ? and yet still mysterious ? species.

It's believed that giant squid (genus Architeuthis) can grow up to 55 feet long. The individual captured on video via a small submarine located in the North Pacific Ocean was about 30 feet long and silver and gold in color, marine biologist Edie Widder, who helped to shoot the footage, said. Her colleague Tsunemi Kubodera added that the squid was missing its two longest tentacles.

Cephalopod experts are intrigued by the world record footage.

PHOTOS: Sea Monsters Real and Imagined

"It was really thrilling to see the press releases concerning the filming of a living giant squid with a manned submersible," William Gilly, a professor of biology at Stanford University and the Hopkins Marine Station, told Discovery News.

    1. Science news from NBCNews.com

      1. Winter's big chill means fewer summer bugs

As the bitter cold in the northeastern United States keeps even hardy New Hampshire skiers off the slopes, there?s at least one potential upside to the cold snap: fewer mosquitoes come summer, according to an entomologist riding out the cold in upstate New York.

      2. Brains vs. immunity: Genes hint at tug of war
      3. Study: Fracking wastewater could be too much
      4. Shrinking proton: Particle is smaller than thought

Gilly previously examined a 7-foot-long giant squid that weighed 300 pounds. It was found floating dead in Monterey Bay, Calif.

"It was missing the tentacles and its stomach had been removed through a hole in its body," he said. "Something strange must like to eat those parts, I guess!"

He also noted that the color-changing system, which functions using organelles called chromatophores that contain pigment and reflect light, was present very deep inside the giant squid's body cavity. In smaller species, this system is arranged only on the body?s outer surface.

In recent months, researchers have also learned more about giant squid eyes. The diameter of these eyes measures two to three times that of any other animal.

Dan-Eric Nilsson of Lund University determined that giant squid eyes measure 10 inches, making them about the same size as a large dinner plate. Big is optimal for sight in deep-water environments.

"For seeing in dim light, a large eye is better than a small eye, simply because it picks up more light," Nilsson said, explaining that the light isn?t from the sun, but rather from bioluminescence emitted by other deep sea species, such as huge and hungry sperm whales.

This bioluminescence, he explained, is ?light produced by small gelatinous animals when they are disturbed by the whale moving through the water. It is well known that bioluminescence can reveal submarines at night, and diving sperm whales will become visible for the same reason."

Bioluminescence even played a key role during the recent filming in about 3,000 feet of water near Japan. Widder, Kubodera and their crew used a lure that mimicked the bioluminescent display of jellyfish in order to attract the giant squid?s attention.

News: Giant squid filmed in Pacific depths

Despite the footage and other recent research, there are still more questions than answers about giant squid.

Gilly, for example, mentioned that the following questions remain: What are their daily behavior patterns? Do they rise toward the surface at night like many other large oceanic squid, or do they remain deep all the time? How can they tolerate the very low oxygen levels at great depths? How rapidly can they swim? What do they eat, and how do they catch prey with their very long tentacles? How many of them are there in any one place? Do they travel in groups like other squid? If so, do they show group behaviors associated with hunting, mating or defense? How big and old can they get?

"These questions can, at least in theory, be answered by existing technologies, including manned and remotely-operated submersibles for filming," he said.

He added that another important tool could be video and archival electronic tags for filming interactions with other animals, monitoring swimming activity, recording migration patterns, and documenting environmental parameters ? such as temperature, depth, light and oxygen ? as the squid moves up and down in the water column.

Such tags are programmed to release at a certain time, permitting researchers to non-invasively study the collected data. Gilly and his colleagues are using these techniques to monitor large Humboldt squid in the Gulf of California and off the Pacific coast from Baja California to Canada. No one, though, has yet been able to successfully capture and tag a giant squid for release back into its habitat.

Gilly said Kubodera might be the one, in the future, to solve this problem. In the meantime, Gilly plans "to wait until Jan. 27 like everyone else" to see the rare giant squid footage.

Discovery Channel's Monster Squid: The Giant Is Real, premieres on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 10/9c as the season finale of Curiosity.

Almost all in Congress use Twitter; if only bills could be as short as tweets

    9 hrs.

Four years ago, when President Barack Obama was first inaugurated, the savvy social media politician was among the first to use Twitter to his advantage to get his message out to voters. Republicans also?used the short-messaging blog back?then to heckle the new president as he delivered a speech to Congress. (Even the mom of Missouri Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill?criticized her daughter for tweeting during the event, although her posts were about seeing Supreme Court? Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg there after her operation for cancer.)

Other politicians were still finding their way on Twitter, including former Michigan congressman Pete Hoekstra, who blared to the world he was on a secret mission to Iraq by tweeting about it in 2009, and in 2011, former New York congressman Anthony Weiner took to Twitter to share lewd photos of himself with a lady friend.

Times have changed with Internet speed. As President Obama heads into his second term,?most politicians are up to snuff?on social media, or have at least hired helpers who know how to make the most of 140 characters or less. Twitter gaffes are no longer the norm. These days, politicians use Twitter to connect with?constituents, provide updates on legislation, comment on big news stories and even share photos of their daily goings-on.?

What's more, Twitter announced that?all 100 members of the U.S. Senate now tweet, compared to 44 percent in 2011; and 90 percent of the members of the House of Representatives send out 140-word bits and bites (or at least their staffers do; it?s often hard to know who is really behind the tweeting). Still, with nearly all of Congress tweeting, why can't bill-writing be done with such brevity? (The Affordable Care Act would have looked a lot different if it had said: "Everybody. Gets. Covered. The End.")

NBC News asked Twitter to tell us who are the ?most followed? senators and representatives. They don?t have numbers quite?like the Bieb (33 million-plus followers) or even the president (26 million-plus). ?But Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, leads this list, with an impressive?nearly 1.8 million followers. Here are the top 5 from each branch of Congress:

He lost the presidential race in 2008, but still holds tremendous sway as one of the Republican Party?s senior senators.

Twitter tendencies: Because McCain, 76, does appeal to both sides of the aisle, his comments carry weight, although his tweets can be a bit dry (again, it?s not known how many of them he posts himself, or whether an overworked staffer is doing that). But they seem heartfelt and sincere. ?Impressive briefing from Afghan Army Gen. Waziri in E. #Afghanistan- heroes who've fought for their country for 30 yrs? ?Very positive meeting with President Karzai yesterday - US must maintain enduring partnership with #Afghanistan if we are to succeed here? and ?Does Eric Schmidt really think that any ordinary North Koreans will hear his call for Internet freedom??

The first-term senator is one of the Republican Party?s much-needed stars, and a Cuban-American who also has received props from the Tea Party.

Twitter tendencies: It could have been Rubio running as Mitt Romney?s veep candidate, although it was?Rep. Paul Ryan who was chosen last summer. Many think Rubio?s year will be 2016, and commend his work on immigration, sure to be a big issue, as indicated by the president in his inauguration speech. Rubio?s tweets seem to be his own, including these: ?#Esquire report on having less hair than I once did is sadly true. But good news is I am still in upper 2% in Senate.? And: ?Man pleads guilty to smuggling birds into US from #Cuba, HIDDEN IN HIS PANTS!!!?

Sanders is the Senate?s only registered Independent, and was recently re-elected to a second term after previously serving several years in Congress.

Twitter tendencies: Sanders titled his 1997 autobiography, ?Outsider in the House,? and enjoys his role as an independent, with a focus on the financial problems of the nation, as well as on global warming. ?In our closed-door (Democratic) caucuses, he's not one of the senators who wants to speak on everything," Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont told the Burlington Free-Press in 2008. "He picks his issues, and when he does speak, he has something valuable to say, and people listen." That includes on Twitter, where Sanders often strikes out at large corporations and Wall Street. ?Allowing Wall St CEOs to serve as @FederalReserve directors and hand-pick its members is a clear example of the fox guarding the henhouse,? he tweeted earlier this month.

    Sen. Al Franken, D-Minnesota

The former ?Saturday Night Live? comedian tackles serious issues, including advocating for better mental health care in the wake of the Newtown school shootings, while also sponsoring lighter events like the recent Secret Santa gift exchange to break tensions among his colleagues.

Twitter tendencies: Franken isn?t a laugh-a-minute; he?s quite Minnesotan: Down-to-business and purposeful. Some of that may be his honesty-in-labeling: ?Official TeamFranken Twitter feed? is what his Twitter page says, indicating the tweets may not be all his. But he is focused on big issues, including Internet freedom and privacy. ?One hurdle cleared! #Senate Judiciary Cmte passes Al's #privacy bill to stop Smartphone Stalking,? he tweeted last month, as well as last June, a what-should-be-common sense approach to electronic records and health care: ?All laptops containing private medical information should be encrypted to protect privacy.?

    Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Missouri

McCaskill won re-election in November after defeating U.S. Rep. Todd Akin of Missouri, whose comments about ?legitimate rape? sent voters ? and his proposed Senate election ? over the edge.

Twitter tendencies: She is one of the few politicians who is personable and personal when she tweets, painting a picture for followers of real life in Washington, D.C.? Among her tweets from the inauguration Monday: ?Four years ago today I began tweeting. One of my first tweets was a comment on (Supreme Court Justice Antonin) Scalia's weird hat. Will he wear it again? Stay tuned.? That was followed up by a tweet????Yup. There it is????and sharing a photo she took.

Tweets like ?House bills are now available for bulk download in XML via @USGPO,? and ?This?@aei chart shows ?above normal? government spending is driving force behind our debt? don?t win tweeting prizes. It?s also a big clue that the down-to-earth congressman probably doesn?t do his own tweets as a rule.

Twitter tendencies: His post-election tweets have been few and far between; he likely had his biggest gains in followers during the campaign, taking the president to task for his fiscal policies. But some signs of Twitter life have been showing in recent days, including these tweets: "We must pay bills today & ensure we can pay bills tomorrow. To do that, we must cut spending & budget responsibly? and ?Senate Democrats have refused to pass a budget. Time to hold them accountable for this legal and moral failure.?

Save Time and Money When Cooking by Making More 2-for-1 Meals

Save Time and Money When Cooking by Making More 2-for-1 MealsSome cooking methods and types of meals can make your food budget go farther and maximize your time in the kitchen. On the Slow Food USA Blog, cookbook author Tamar Adler suggests cooking things in ways that create a second ingredient, which can double the number of meals you get out of one cooking session.

As an example, Adler suggests boiling or braising meat instead of simply grilling:

Cook things in ways that create a second ingredient-if you boil or braise meat, you end up with broth or with braising liquid ?whatever combination of vegetables and wine and water or stock the meat cooked in. That means that you have the meat itself for a meal or several, and then the beginnings of a soup, or several. It doubles the number of meals you get for your money and the time you've spent cooking. When you grill something, you have only the meat itself.

Creating broth or stock at the same time you cook the meat, keeps you from having to spend extra time creating the stock in the traditional way by roasting the bones later.

Another money-saving idea is to use parts of the food for separate dishes:

A similar piece of advice is buying meat with its skin and bones. I've taken salmon skin off salmon and cooked each separately. After eating the salmon, I ate another meal of plain rice with a bit of saut?ed spinach and salmon skin on top.

Finally, cooking like a peasant, with versatile, simple ingredients, definitely can help save money on groceries.

Hit up the link below for more tips on cooking simply and well.

The Hookup Culture: Why Millennials Struggle With Attachment and ...

? Posted by Corey Magstadt on Jan 24, 2013 in Church, Parents, Young Adult | 0 comments

    Millennial intimacy

What is going on with Millennials and their sexuality? Friends with Benefits? No Strings Attached Relationships? Hooking up?

What we see in the Millennial generation is a generation that didn?t want to see the dysfunctional marriages that they themselves lived with when they were growing up and yet they still wanted to sustain and gratify their sexual urges (hence, these uncommitted relationships). This generation is having a hard time forming attachments with other people. You can blame it on movies with Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman or you could blame it on a culture that is built around instant gratification. You could even say that it is our ultimate desire that we just want to do what other people are doing so that we aren?t a social oddity. I ultimately believe it comes down to an identity problem.

No matter how we go through life we will assert our imprint on the world. Even social disengagement is a form of social engagement. How we interact with the world stems from a fundamental understanding of who we think we are. So in my sexual relationships, I have sex (or don?t have sex) with those based on how I understand myself and how I understand myself through others.

One of the most renowned 20th century psychologists Erik Erikson noted that the age in which we are supposed to be developing meaningful and bonding relationships happens between 18-30 (the age of the current Millennial relationships). Erikson believed, and I believe rightly, that it takes two whole people to bond and create whole relationships. It isn?t rocket science that broken people tend to create two types of social reactions when relationships are imposed upon them: codependent relationships or retreating into isolation.

As Christians we believe that when we engage in sexual activity that there is a bond that is inseparable. Neuroscience has come to the same conclusion. When people have sex, several chemicals in their brain are released: one is oxytocin and another is dopamine. Oxytocin is the bonding chemical. When we have sex with someone we are supposed to be bonded to this person. The more bonds we form with others, and these relationships are torn apart or disengaged, the more we struggle to bond with another. Dopamine is the feel good chemical. The more dopamine is released in our brain, the more we become attached to it. This is how sexual addictions are created. Sigmund Freud also called this engagement where sexual activity is used as a form to merely annihilate the tension we feel in our body a Death Instinct. It seems that from the Bible to neuroscience to Freud, that our sexuality outside of Eros, out of continual longing for union with a person, that our actions will lead to some form of biological or metaphysical death.

All of this to bring us back to our fundamental question: Who am I? When we don?t know who we are, we won?t know what to do in our social engagements (sexual or not). Maybe our critique of the Millennial generation, my generation, comes from a poor or broken understanding of who we are. For Christians, we are called to help people understand who they are in Christ (as the beloved). If we are not Christians, how do we invite people into wholeness? How do we help people find themselves? How do we help people find one another?

Abbott results bode well for spun-off AbbVie

(Reuters) - AbbVie Inc , the new branded pharmaceuticals company spun off by Abbott Laboratories Inc , is off to a good start, judging by fourth-quarter sales of arthritis drug Humira and other products in its medicine chest.

Analysts said the picture, although healthy, could be more challenging for the remaining Abbott, nicknamed "new Abbott," which continues to sell medical devices, diagnostics, nutritional products and generic drugs.

Abbott said it expects earnings for 2013, excluding special items, of $1.98 to $2.04 per share, in line with its earlier guidance and above the average Wall Street forecast of $1.95.

Fourth-quarter sales of products that remain with Abbott were $5.7 billion, roughly in line with analysts' forecasts. The company did not provide comparable sales figures for the fourth quarter of 2011.

Global sales of branded drugs that now belong to AbbVie rose 7.4 percent to $5.14 billion in the fourth quarter, topping the $4.8 billion estimate of Wells Fargo analyst Larry Biegelsen. The rise would have been 8.5 percent if not for the stronger dollar, which lowers the value of sales in overseas markets.

Sales of Humira, by far AbbVie's biggest product, jumped 23 percent to $2.68 billion, about $200 million above Biegelsen's estimate.

That represented a marked acceleration of sales growth from the prior two quarters and underscores how reliant AbbVie is on the injectable product, which is expected to become the world's top-selling medicine this year.

AbbVie, spun off by Abbott earlier this month, is expected to report its interpretation of the fourth-quarter results and its 2013 forecast on January 30.

Among top product lines still sold by Abbott, sales of nutritional brands jumped 10.2 percent to $1.71 billion in the fourth quarter, and sales of laboratory diagnostics grew 3.8 percent to $908 million. Sales of diabetes care products rose 3.1 percent to $362 million, reversing a 10 percent decline seen in the prior quarter.

Abbott shares were fractionally lower in morning trading, while AbbVie shares rose almost 2 percent, both on the New York Stock Exchange.

RIM sets stage for clients to run BlackBerry 10 devices

TORONTO (Reuters) - Research In Motion has released a new system to allow its biggest customers to use its new line of BlackBerry 10 smartphones on their own networks, paving the way for the January 30 launch of the make-or-break devices.

RIM said on Wednesday that the new device management system - BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 (BES 10)- is now available to government agencies and corporate clients. The system lets clients support both corporate-and employee-owned devices and provides a single platform to manage BlackBerry, Android and Apple's iOS-based devices.

The Blackberry smartphones, powered by an all-new operating system, are pivotal to the future of RIM, which has ceded market share to Apple Inc's iPhone and devices powered by Google Inc's market-leading Android operating system.

RIM is now betting that its re-engineered new line of touch-screen and keyboard devices will help it win back consumers and market share.

The fate of the new smartphones could well be determined by the reception from RIM's major clients, many of whom have, so far, only stuck by RIM because of the strong security features that BlackBerry devices offer.

The new mobile device management system builds on RIM's core strength of security, but it offers a range of innovations that allow it to cater to the latest needs of IT departments, said Peter Devenyi, RIM's senior head of enterprise software.

"We definitely anticipate that (enterprise) customers will be making the switch to BB10 rapidly," said Devenyi, describing the feedback from government agencies and the business community as remarkably positive.

Both BES 10 and the new Blackberry 10 devices have already secured Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification, a coveted U.S. government security clearance that will allow government agencies to deploy the new devices as soon as they are launched.

    BLACKBERRY BALANCE

Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM said BES 10 also supports RIM's BlackBerry Balance technology, which allows IT departments and users to separate work applications and data on BlackBerry devices from personal content.

"BlackBerry Balance is a truly differentiated feature that's built into the core of BlackBerry 10," said Devenyi. "This opens up the world of personally owned devices in a way that make IT departments and corporations comfortable, because they can truly manage the corporate side of the device, while not inhibiting the use of the device by the individual who actually owns it."

This means private pictures, music and emails are safe, even if a company decides to wipe corporate content from a device.

Scotiabank analyst Gus Papageorgiou believes that this one feature alone is likely to be a big factor in swaying enterprise customers to upgrade to RIM's BlackBerry 10 devices.

"We believe BlackBerry Balance is the key feature which will drive enterprise demand," Papageorgiou said in a note to clients on Tuesday. "The BB10's ability to segment between corporate and personal settings will be a hit with enterprise IT departments and users alike."

RIM said its new platform will also offer a new corporate app store for BlackBerry 10 devices, allowing organizations to manage the deployment of in-house applications on employee-owned devices.

"We've been testing BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 in our environment and we're pleased with the manageability, security and reliability," said Peter Lesser, the head of global technology at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, in a statement issued by RIM.

3 E-commerce Trends to Watch in China in 2013

China?s e-commerce sector has grown rapidly over the course of the past five years. By the end of the third quarter of 2012, the total transaction volume of China?s online retail market reached $125 billion (781 billion Chinese yuan), which accounted for 5.2 percent of China?s total retail sales for consumer goods. Moving forward into the new year, what can we expect from China?s e-commerce sector in 2013?

    1. China could overtake the US to become the world?s largest online shopping market

China?s 12th five-year economic development plan listed e-commerce as one of the priority sectors to develop. Its Ministry of Commerce announced that China is going to become the world?s largest online retail market by 2013. Regardless of whether this occurs in 2013 or 2014, given the vast netizen base in China and its constantly improving e-commerce ecosystem, China will become the largest e-commerce market sooner or later. According to a recent study that was conducted by my company 1, in 2013, China?s online retail transactions are predicted to reach $251 billion ? extremely close to $252 billion in the US. In terms of the number of online consumers, China has already surpassed all other nations, by possessing 228 million online shoppers ? equivalent to approximately 73 percent of the entire US population. Whether or not China tops the world in 2013, the point is e-commerce has already significantly transformed the traditional retail landscape in China, and online shopping has become a central characteristic of Chinese consumers? shopping habits.

2: Lower-tier cities will be more important in China?s online shopping landscape

    alibaba

    photo: techzb.com

According to data released from Alibaba Group, the e-commerce conglomerate had an annual turnover of $160 billion (1 trillion Chinese yuan) in 2012. Sales in China?s lower-tier cities increased over 60 percent while the growth rate in first-tier cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou was less than 40 percent year on year.

China?s inland provinces possess the greatest number of potential online shoppers. These shoppers are migrating online for the first time, learning from their counterparts in China?s major metropolises.

More importantly, with the improving logistics capacity in remote areas and improvements in online shopping safety, online channels will become increasingly popular among Chinese consumers from rural areas. The internet enables lower-tier consumers to access more products and brands, which may not be available in their local stores. This is especially good news for Western brands that want to try to reach more Chinese consumers given that building brick-and-mortar outlets in China?s central and Western provinces is risky. E-commerce therefore is a more flexible and cost-efficient approach to reaching the majority of Chinese consumers.

    3. Mobile commerce in China is set to thrive in 2013

While many declared 2012 as the beginning of the mobile commerce era in China, m-commerce is set to explode in 2013. In the first half of 2012, according to the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), 37.5 million online shoppers in China purchased products via their smartphones, which increased 59.7 percent year on year. Turnover of mobile purchases accounted for roughly five percent of the total transaction volume of all online shopping, and this share is expected to reach 15 percent by 2015.

Mobile phones have replaced desktop computers to become the main devices for accessing internet in 2012 2. Due to the overall increase in usage of mobile devices including smartphones and tablets, mobile commerce will keep on gaining popularity and grow in significance. In addition, barriers that hold back the development of mobile commerce in China are diminishing, and improved 3G network capabilities will considerably advance user experience for shopping via mobile devices. Moreover, mobile payment in China is evolving rapidly as well. Market research company iResearch, predicts in the following three to five years that China?s mobile payment market will increase at a rate of over 40 percent year-on-year.

China?s e-commerce sector will only grow in strategic importance for Western and Asian firms alike. As we begin 2013, these three trends will undoubtedly be key drivers for its growth over the course of the year. Companies and entrepreneurs seeking to capitalize on the potential of China?s e-commerce sector should keep these trends in mind as they execute on their business plans for 2013.

China says Philippines' U.N. request on seas complicates issue

BEIJING (Reuters) - China said on Wednesday that a request by the Philippines for a U.N. tribunal to intervene in its longstanding South China Sea territorial dispute with China would only complicate the issue, and denounced Manila's "illegal occupation" of islands there.

Manila has asked the tribunal of the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to order a halt to China's activities that the Philippines says violates the Southeast Asian nation's sovereignty.

China's claims over islands, reefs and atolls in resource-rich waters off its south coast and to the east of mainland Southeast Asia set it directly against Vietnam and the Philippines, while Brunei, Taiwan and Malaysia also lay claim to parts.

Asked about the Philippines' move, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said its southern neighbor was occupying some of China's islands in the South China Sea.

"China has consistently opposed the Philippines' illegal occupation," he told a daily news briefing.

China supports talks, but only on a bilateral basis with the countries directly involved, as previously agreed on by China and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Hong added.

"We hope that the relevant country honors its promises, and ... does not take any action to complicate or expand the problem," he said, without elaborating.

It was not clear how the tribunal could help. While all its decisions are binding on countries concerned, it has no power to enforce them.

BPA substitute could spell trouble: Experiments show bisphenol S also disrupts hormone activity

Jan. 22, 2013 ? A few years ago, manufacturers of water bottles, food containers, and baby products had a big problem. A key ingredient of the plastics they used to make their merchandise, an organic compound called bisphenol A, had been linked by scientists to diabetes, asthma and cancer and altered prostate and neurological development. The FDA and state legislatures were considering action to restrict BPA's use, and the public was pressuring retailers to remove BPA-containing items from their shelves.

The industry responded by creating "BPA-free" products, which were made from plastic containing a compound called bisphenol S. In addition to having similar names, BPA and BPS share a similar structure and versatility: BPS is now known to be used in everything from currency to thermal receipt paper, and widespread human exposure to BPS was confirmed in a 2012 analysis of urine samples taken in the U.S., Japan, China and five other Asian countries.

According to a study by University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston researchers, though, BPS also resembles BPA in a more problematic way. Like BPA, the study found, BPS disrupts cellular responses to the hormone estrogen, changing patterns of cell growth and death and hormone release. Also like BPA, it does so at extremely low levels of exposure.

"Our studies show that BPS is active at femtomolar to picomolar concentrations just like endogenous hormones -- that's in the range of parts per trillion to quadrillion," said UTMB professor Cheryl Watson, senior author of a paper on the study now online in the advance publications section of Environmental Health Perspectives. "Those are levels likely to be produced by BPS leaching from containers into their contents."

Watson and graduate student Ren? Vi?as conducted cell-culture experiments to examine the effects of BPS on a form of signaling that involves estrogen receptors -- the "receivers" of a biochemical message -- acting in the cell's outer membrane instead of the cell nucleus. Where nuclear signaling involves interaction with DNA to produce proteins and requires hours to days, membrane signaling (also called "non-genomic" signaling) acts through much quicker mechanisms, generating a response in seconds or minutes.

Watson and Vi?as focused on key biochemical pathways that are normally stimulated when estrogen activates membrane receptors. One, involving a protein known as ERK, is linked to cell growth; another, labeled JNK, is tied to cell death. In addition, they examined the ability of BPS to activate proteins called caspases (also linked to cell death) and promote the release of prolactin, a hormone that stimulates lactation and influences many other functions.

"These pathways form a complicated web of signals, and we're going to need to study them more closely to fully understand how they work," Watson said. "On its own, though, this study shows us that very low levels of BPS can disrupt natural estrogen hormone actions in ways similar to what we see with BPA. That's a real cause for concern."

This topic is an Out Of Character part of the roleplay, ?ForeverMates?. Anything posted here will also show up there.

    Topic Tags:

Forum for completely Out of Character (OOC) discussion, based around whatever is happening In Character (IC). Discuss plans, storylines, and events; Recruit for your roleplaying game, or find a GM for your playergroup.

The pairings will be posted here, once we start and actually get to the ceremony. (: The days will probably pass quickly, only focusing on the first day of school and Friday. Then time will 'slow' and everything will start getting interesting. [Hopefully xD].
